Special Back-to-Back Celebration: Autism, UN Day and Halloween  email this discussion to a friend?

Here's another accomplishment of my kids worth sharing. My kids just had their back-to-back celebration of the UN Day and the Halloween. Highlights of the program are as follows:

United Nations Day Celebration: To avoid extra costs- the kids were not required to wear national costumes of the countries that they represent instead the teachers gave each a sash with their respective countries and flaglets. My youngest son who's in the mainstream program did a catwalk, modeled and introduced himself confidently. He was able to deliver his script clearly as Mr. Philippines and my eldest son who's still in the SPED program did the same thing too, as Mr. Japan. Although, he was not in the mood then because he was so sleepy, he did his best to participate. The teachers, parents and their classmates applauded both of them and were so happy about their performance. I was teary-eyed then and was so proud of my sons. They did a song and dance number too.

Halloween: The teachers were creative enough not to let us spent much for this event. Our only share is two-bags of assorted candies for the kids "trick or treat". Again, the kids were not required to wear their Halloween costumes. The teachers did. They hid in their respective classrooms in their Halloween costume waiting for the kids to knock for the trick or treat game. Their lote bags were full of assorted candies. It was a simple but fun event for my dear kids.

How about you? Do you have anything to share about your kids Halloween activities in and out of school? I will be happy to hear from you Mylot moms, dads and friends. Thanks!

My kids are never at school for halloween. They have what we call half term which is a weeks holiday from school. It has nothing to do with halloween it is just to break the school year up for them.

But for halloween we went to a party as its my nephews birthday on halloween, plus they went trick or treating. I always decorate the house and we have party games and all sorts. The kids also dress up for the event. We all love it in our house as halloween = one big party

Hi msfrancisco,

Congratulations to you and your kids, your kids deserve a big applause for doing really great in school. Their accomplishments are far more meaningful as they are special, and they are indeed lucky coz they have a special mom. Proud mom, that's what you are, and with good reasonsthumbup.

hi doryvien,

Thanks for your continuous support as my friend and colleague. Thanks for being happy and proud of me always as a special mom of my dear precious sons.

How about red and ram, how did they celebrate the halloween?

Well not the very Halloween-ish type of observance. Remember there was a very strong typhoon on the day before that, so even when I watched 2 horror movies on TV that night I was still more scared of the strong winds brought about by the typhoon. I was so afraid the whole village will be flooded again(oh, no, not againcry). Thanks God on the day of the Halloween the sun smiled at all of us. We took advantage of the good weather, went out and watched the movie Astroboy.

...at least you have the feel of the halloween via watching horror movies and bringing your sons to the movie house thanks to santi for leaving our country soon that families enjoyed the long weekend together. thanks mama!

They had a little Halloween party for the kids. They dressed up Fri. By the end of the day all the kids had changed their costumes back to regular clothes. We went trick-or-treating Saturday night.

LOL. She was Hannah Montana, minus the wig after about five minutes. LOL My son was a white tiger. He acted like he loved his costume. On sunday, he was trying to go trick or treating again. I think he just liked walking around.

myLot reputation of 98/100. msfrancisco9369 (4836)   ranked 13 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

that's so cute of your kids... how i wish we had the same thing too this year. but we really are in crisis so we just enjoy the halloween without wearing any costume but still it was fun with all the candies that we got.

Your kid has all the energy to have that walk and enjoy halloween candies.

myLot reputation of 96/100. mommaj (1305)   ranked 27 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

LOL. I wish I had half the energy my kids do. LOL My daughter loves trick or treating. I think it was wonderful that she got a chance to go. I think this year my son was "old" enough mentally to start seeing it.

myLot reputation of 98/100. msfrancisco9369 (4836)   ranked 13 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

why? how old is your son? i wish to have that much energy too so that i can go with the flow---ALWAYS! they're so hyper!

myLot reputation of 96/100. mommaj (1305)   ranked 27 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

My son is 4 and 1/2. His mind is around a two year olds.

myLot reputation of 98/100. msfrancisco9369 (4836)   ranked 13 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

Ah ok. thanks for sharing. How old was he when he was diagnosed?

myLot reputation of 96/100. mommaj (1305)   ranked 27 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

I tried to get him diagnosed at two, but the doctors wanted to wait until he was three. As a parent, that seems like forever when you KNOW something is wrong.

myLot reputation of 98/100. msfrancisco9369 (4836)   ranked 13 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

my eldest son was diagnosed at the age 2 1/2 years old but we were advised for a conformation test at the age of 4. we did. he was confirmed to be in the autism spectrum--mild autism but his delay is more on speech unlike my youngest son.

myLot reputation of 96/100. mommaj (1305)   ranked 27 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

Bless your heart, hugs to you. My son is diagnosed with classic autism and is in need of all the therapies. He is okay though, so don't feel bad about him. The gross motor skills are okay, but the fine motor skills need lots of work. He can't pick up puzzle pieces yet, but he's getting there.

I asked the doctor worse case scenario. He wouldn't give me one. He did tell me that he expects my son to start showing violent tendencies. If he means temper tantrums yeah he's there. LOL What I think he meant was hitting others to get what he wants or just to show frustration when they don't understand. Luckily, we don't have that type of issue.

I told my husband I am going to work out as our son gets older, just so I can always handle him. LOL

myLot reputation of 98/100. msfrancisco9369 (4836)   ranked 13 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

Thanks for sharing your story with me. I will keep it in my heart and will be more inspired by it as i continue to take care to and provide all the support for my two kids with special needs. We are both lucky for having a loving and supportive husbands too.

myLot reputation of 96/100. mommaj (1305)   ranked 27 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

Thanks for the best response.

Yesterday I met a lady who armed me with enough information about IEP's that I am sure my son will get more help. I am so hopeful. I will let you know how the meeting goes. Do you have this in the phillipines?

myLot reputation of 98/100. msfrancisco9369 (4836)   ranked 13 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

yes we have IEPs. we review and revised or enhanced it every quarter. this program is very helpful. user friendly that you can easily see you son's development, strengths and areas for improvement. great that you have yours too. goodluck you and your baby.

myLot reputation of 96/100. mommaj (1305)   ranked 27 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

Our IEP is yearly unless you request one sooner. I had no idea you could even request one. I had been trying to get one because I wanted to get more speech therapy for him. Once I got an outside speech therapist, low and behold, the school wants to have an IEP now. I hope it's coincedence that we are having one after they know I learned about them.

myLot reputation of 98/100. msfrancisco9369 (4836)   ranked 13 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

that's good. we have the general IEP for a year but is revised and enhanced on a quarterly basis depending on the response of the kid. that's good. good luck. i hope you will get the best one for your baby.

myLot reputation of 96/100. mommaj (1305)   ranked 27 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

Now that I know I can revise it at anytime and that they have to give me most of what I ask for, I am headed over the top, so I can "settle" for what I really want.

myLot reputation of 98/100. msfrancisco9369 (4836)   ranked 13 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

yes you can. we have monthly meetings for updates. we have a daily notebook of what happened in the session. i gave my feedback so that's how tedious is the interaction with the teacher--with the team. so, we are on top of everything for our kids. go ahead friend!

myLot reputation of 96/100. mommaj (1305)   ranked 27 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

I just found out that is the way it is supposed to be here. I guess they thought if they didn't make the information available, noone would look. LOL I can honestly say, I wouldn't have looked except the speech therapist I got outside of school told me the school should be giving him more services and asked to see his IEP. She looked at it and then told me what needed to be done. That was so nice of her.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Canellita (4243)   ranked 383 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

You were very lucky to find that speech therapist!

myLot reputation of 96/100. mommaj (1305)   ranked 27 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

I agree with that. No one would have ever told me that he was entitled to more.

How nice for you! I take it your eldest son is autistic? It sounds like your family had a wonderful day, or was it two different days?

myLot reputation of 98/100. msfrancisco9369 (4836)   ranked 13 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

both my sons are autistic. the eldest is still in SPED program and my youngest is in his first year of the mainstreaming program. they're in one school but with different types of intervention. but during school programs SPED is mixed with the mainstream and regular class. they have their respective numbers and presentations. I was really teary-eyed how they excellently made it the program. I am really proud of my sons.

Yes it's two different days... October 29 for the school and October 30- for the mall!

myLot reputation of 96/100. Canellita (4243)   ranked 383 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

Ah, ok. I wasn't sure if you'd mentioned this before. There are a few people in myLot I have communicated with who have autistic children.

myLot reputation of 98/100. msfrancisco9369 (4836)   ranked 13 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

That is so awesome!

myLot reputation of 98/100. msfrancisco9369 (4836)   ranked 13 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

another accomplishment friend...we just arrived from the kids fieldtrip and they behaved so well. we visited the manila ocean park and the ark avilon. they were exposed to sea creatures and land-based animals. it was tiring but we had lots of fun!

myLot reputation of 96/100. Canellita (4243)   ranked 383 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

Have they always been so well behaved? Was it difficult for them starting school?

myLot reputation of 98/100. msfrancisco9369 (4836)   ranked 13 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

We experienced the same thing too with parents who's kids are about to start to school with all those tantrums and cries. It took us a month for the eldest to be comfortable in school and a week for the youngest.

The eldest was diagnosed at 2.5 years old and was confirmed at 4 years old. since the first diagnosed, he had an early intervention where we enrolled him in SPED school and provided all the therapies that he needs. He has speech delay but and manifesting lots of autism symptoms like flapping, hyper, no fear, etc... but was able to develop lots of lifeskills as he grow. Now he is 13 years old still having difficulty with speech but can express himself. if you're not able to understand him he will spell it out for you.

My youngest is doing well in his first year under the mainstream program.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Canellita (4243)   ranked 383 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

It's great that he can spell things out when you can't understand him. It sounds as though both of your sons are doing quite well.

myLot reputation of 98/100. msfrancisco9369 (4836)   ranked 13 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

yes Canellita, they are doing their best to communicate and be understood. they have their unique way of handling things to express their thoughts and feelings. thanks god they are full of energy to learn and integrate learnings and put it into action.

myLot reputation of 96/100. Canellita (4243)   ranked 383 out of 2,147 in children  3 years ago

That's great! More students should be like them!
