This is Lord Lyttleton's quote "Where none admire 'tis useless to excel'

excelling - It is not right to say that when no one is looking that we should stop performing.

Do you believe in this quote? These days there are more performers than critics and as per this saying if you have no one to admire you, you should give up excelling. I disagree with this totally. What is your take on this?

The man who sculpted the Statue of Liberty didn't agree with that saying. At the time of his work, it would not have been possible for people to see the top of the lady's head, but it is intricately carved, with just as much detail as the rest of the statue. To all intents and purposes, no one would ever see it, but years later, with helicopters and planes flying overhead, it can be seen and admired. Good, better, best. Never let it rest Until your good is better, And your better is best!

Hi cloudwatcher, That should be the spirit. Admiration or no admiration let's carry on with our good work!

hi allknowing no I do not believe in that at all. I imagine Gutzomn Borglum who with his family carved the presidents faces on Mt. Rushmore would have agreed. Some well a lot of people did not admire what he started but when it was finished a great many people did admire what he did. I think we should strive to excel inspite of what people do or do not think of our work for we must please our own feelings. a lot of inventions would never have been invented if all people felt they should not excel if nobody was applauding their efforts.
