Are you altruistic or selfish?

I personally believe in thinking about the consequences of my actions first. A decision you take for selfish reasons can easily hurt others and this means you sometimes have to step back, be altruistic for other peoples good.
If you are in a situation where you need to decide if you want to take a decision for your own benefit or step back a little for other peoples benefit - what would you do? Being selfish or altruistic?
