When going to India, where should I visit/stay?

I've always wanted to visit India, the exotic rich culture just attracts me like no other. However, I have always thought about the safety of the country. I dont want to eat something off and have diarrhea the entire trip, nor do I want my money stolen or become nagged by unwanted pedestrians.
If anyone has been and can tell me a review of their trip, that'd be awesome and greatly appreciated!
