What do you consider poetry? email this discussion to a friend?

rockandrolldad (29)4 weeks ago

As a writer of poetry, I wonder what other people consider to be poetry? I know that some people only consider poetry that rhymes as being the only true poetry. Then there are those that love free verse the only true style. While even more folks consider only those poems that follows certain guidelines and rules as being real poetry. Is there anyone out there that believes that only a small faction of the most accomplished poets should determine what is and is not poetry? How many people enjoy poetry ... either reading or writing it? Thanks for taking the time to read.

Personally, I'm don't even try to write poetry, but I do enjoy reading it. I've read poetry that came across as a light shining in the darkness and other times full of nonesense, fun, and joy. Reading poety brings more positive thoughts to my mind to keep the negative thoughts at bay. I have found taking the time to read poetry in any form gives me a needed lift to bring me back to sanity. I've enjoyed poetry that rhymes, but it makes me feel at times that the poet didn't say what he or she wanted to say because it didn't rhyme. Make sense? Yes, I agree there are a lot of accomplished poets out there and they write some pretty good stuff! My real preference is free verse. That allows the poet to come across exactly like they wanted to and not putting limits to their imaginations. I like honesty and realism. Don't you? Congratulations to being a poet. My hat is off to you. I'd love to read your poetry sometime.

Ripple555 ... Thanks for sharing your thoughts on poetry. I believe that at times I like all different styles the best. I guess it just depends what mood of poetry that I'm in at the time. I believe though that being able to feel what someone else feels through the writing is pretty cool. I think that as long as someone is his or her self while writing that all poetry has merits. But I do feel that it should come from within someone. So yes, I like honesty and realism. And if you ever read some of what I have written I truly don't believe that you find too many poets that write straight from the heart that I do. It's like I've mentioned to others before. I might not know a lot of things but I do know the way that I feel. Thanks again.

I used to write peotry in High school and was told I could have it published what works for me is that it has to come from the heart or it just sounds forced and phony.

rockandrolldad (29)  4 weeks ago

I definitely agree with you workingmoomy that poetry should come from the heart but still I will give credit to those that write different forms of poetry than that. There are many great poets out there. And I have an appreciation for all those that have the ability to create regardless of their area of expertise. It kinda would be cool to have a section on this site where we could share our own poetry. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I definitely don't think poetry has to rhyme. Or that free verse is the only true form. I think it helps to have some rhythm...there is even a rhythm in he freestyle-type poetry that is pretty popular at poetry slams. I think it should sound better read aloud than it does in your head. That is my goal when writing poetry (lots of parallel structure and internal rhymes) but I have enjoyed poetry that had more ambiguity in its rhythm as well. I agree that the feeling and intent are really important when you're writing.

rockandrolldad (29)  4 weeks ago

jleigh ... I agree with you that it should sound better when rad aloud then while in your head. But curiously, I kinda have a deeper voice with a sort of southern twist to it and when I read poetry it doesn't sound that well. And sadly that is even when I read works by Yeatts and Poe and others ... LOL LOL That is sad, but true. But I have written some poems and read them and they totally kinda stunk. But then I let others read them and they sound good. So I think that having presentation skills helps a lot in itself. And I too have noticed that at times that slam poetry does have a rhythm while I noticed that sometimes rhyming poetry sounds kinda forced. Thanks for sharing your insight.

I am also a writer of poetry. i used to feel that poetry needed to rhyme. Now i am into a lot of free verse forms. I see poetry in things that sometimes orhers don't. I see poetry as expression. The words and flow of a poem show the world your innerself. Your creativity is unleashed for all the world to see. I try to paint a picture with my poetry. Some people may see what i see from it. yet others can take something else from it. Just express yourself!

rockandrolldad (29)  4 weeks ago

I've written and posted a lot of poetry on the web and have received quite a bit of positive feedback. But the one thing that kinda has meant a lot to me is when people say that my heart and soul comes out through the words that I write. The ultimate compliment that I received is from a lady that had terminal cancer and she said that my poems helped her get through the day sometimes. I truly feel so blessed by having had an impact on someone's life like that. It is awesome though to be able to visualize what you are reading and to feel what others are going through. Well, then again, that would probably depend on what it is tat someone is feeling. LOL LOL Thanks for adding your thoughts.

I love poetry and it doesn't even matter if they rhyme or not. Its the message behind the words and what the author is trying to convey that makes me love poems more. But I still love the classics and even have an old poetry book, I believe its already a collectors item. When I feel down, I flip through the yellowed pages and read a poem or two. This usually perks me up.

rockandrolldad (29)  4 weeks ago

So, do tell, what kind of old poetry book is it? I lovethe old ones as well. Blake, Poe, Shakespeare and even some accomplished Japanes and Chinese write as well. Like I admire watching an artist create a masterpiece or watching my grandpa as he whittled and carved from blocks of wood, I admire a person that can express themselves creatively. So who is your favorite poet. Of the modern day ones. I like Maya Angelo the best. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Poetry as I've known is the highest form of expression. I'm a musician and a song writer so you could maybe say what i do is somewhat related to this topic. i think poetry doesn't have to be as deep as though only a few can understand it. the very idea of poetry is expressing it in a multiple meaning lines, so it should go with writing a lyrics of a song and maybe a poem can also be applied in a song to. but i like your perception about what a poem really is.

rockandrolldad (29)  4 weeks ago

zipdez ... I definitely agree with you as to how they both interconnect at times. I played the trumpet in the band at school and I play the guitar now. I'm not sure that I'm a musician though ... LOL LOL LOL Just kidding, my playing isn't that bad. But seriously though, I have written a poem for someone and ended up making a song out it. And it is nothing much more that I enjoy than to just get lost in my music. I'm sure you know what I men by that. So, I can relate to the highest form of expression both in music and in poetry as well.

The poet write poems!I used to write poems at the university! It likes something relax and refresh myself.Poem is poem as it is,various style and pattern,it is the carrier for blowing off the emtion or express how delight you are or the feelings to something or somebody. If you believe and fulfill, anything you write is poem.let's say no to the people of most accomplished.

rockandrolldad (29)  4 weeks ago

lichee_china ... I see that we think alike. I have posted hundreds maybe even over a thousand of poems on this one site and I had a big disagreement with a few people that claimed that only those that followed traditional views regarding their poetry wrote true poetry. They believe that only those that did wrote good poetry and the rest was substandard, For which I responded, that any poetry that was written by anyone that came from the heart and soul or even their own creative mind was true poetry. That it isn't just a select few that gets to define good or bad poetry as all poetry is good to someone. What one person likes there will be ten that dislikes. That the true definition of whether poetry is good or not lies in the eyes of the ones that read it. It is the reader that decides. Thanks for your sharing your thoughts.
