Is car insurance in the US really expensive for drivers under 21?

Here, in the UK, if you're 17 or 18 and newly qualified, insurance is around £1500 on the cheapest to insure cars (generally the ones with the smallest engines, and therefore smallest cars) and that might only cover 3rd party, fire & theft. Quite often 1 year's insurance can be more than the value of your car.

So this means new drivers have to drive small cars eg. Ford Ka, Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa. As it would be ridiculously expensive for anything bigger. A Ford Focus is probably the biggest car you could insure.

However, on American TV shows, people under 20 quite often have much bigger cars, sometimes even pick up trucks for example. So i was wondering is insurance on bigger cars for young drivers more affordable over there? Anyone know?
