It's Snowing Outside, I Think My Gardening Is Over email this discussion to a friend?

Well it kept getting colder here in New Brunswick and now it's snowing, with a bit of rain just to make it messy.

I guess I won't be doing any more gardening this year. Time to find a new hobby for winter. Guess I can tie some extra flies for my fly fishing trips.

Are you still able to keep gardening when it gets really cold?

I was looking out my office window yesterday and could hardly see our backyard for the snow falling but today it's sunny and there is no snow on the ground at all. A little stayed on the garbage can and BBQ but no where else.

It won't stay like that for long.

happy We've had our first killing frosts, so yes, the gardens are kaput, but we've not had our first snowfalls yet. I always enjoy the snow through about January...but then I get "hungry" for spring!

In the meantime, I do have some tomatoes put up for the winter.

We ran out of tomatoes this year before we could can any for the winter but next year I plan to plant 3 or 4 times as many so we can do more with them and still share with our friends and neighbours.

My garden was finished about a month ago when we had a 14 inch snow and a hard freeze. The only things left are those to dig, like horseradish, Jerusalem artichokes and some dandelion roots I wanted for dandelion coffee.

It's hard to let the garden go!

Wow that's a pile of snow already. Brrr

I have never tried dandelion coffee. Can you explain to me how you prepare it?

Here's a blog post that explains it. Cleaning it is the hardest part, but I made it harder than you have to. You don't have to trim off the small roots or double scrub it - it's a sort of dirty color naturally and you'll never scrub that off.:)

Forgot to say that I grind them in a coffee grinder and then make the "coffee" in a coffee percolator, but you can just boil them in anything after they're ground up. Don't use a food processor because it will make them into powder which is really hard to filter out.

I just 'rolled up' every thing too last weekend. We also have had snow and I picked last weekend while the ground was clear to clean up the deck, furniture, the grill, and some flower pots and ornaments from the garden. I also cleaned completely the lawnmower and re stacked everything in the garden shed so it would all fit!
Soo glad it is done and the clematis I trimmed also, rather that wait till spring, since it was so blowing at that part of the house and the trellis doing damage, so that also is down now for the winter.. I need to find a better solution though.

The cyclamen I took in is blooming so beautifully and the amaryllis is leafing..
AND all the geraniums and other such are also in and safe from frost and cold.

Snow again today and low temperatures.. I hate the cold actually although the snows and skies are gorgeous here.

Extra flies over winter. hmm., good idea.. I always wait till spring!rolleyes
