federe or sampras- who is the greatest?

Federer is a great champion and has surpassed Pete in slam titles but he is nowhere near Sampras. According to me to know who is great you have to take a look at their competition they played against. Sampras played against players like Rafter, Agassi, Boris Becker, Edberg, Richard Krajieck, Thomas Muster and so many more who were at their game most importantly. Now coming to Roger he came to the Tennis arena when Tennis was in crossroads. Agassi was old and pete reached retirement, hewitt was out of form and other players were lot younger than him.

If the competition would have been as tough as the Sampras days then Roger would have probably won 10 titles. The only opponent for him was Nadal and even he too came only after few years. Only now younger players are reaching completion in their game and that's why he finds it a little hard to win these days. Federer on the whole was without any stiff competiton atleast for 3 years during which he amassed lot of titles.

I would on the whole say that eventhough Roger a great champion Pete is a greater champion

ROGER is greatest ever champion of all era of tennis.. no one there to reach his record..he still great in tennis.. my champ can win many more slams.. ROGER FEDERER...

I do not think it is right to compare champions from two different eras simply because the competition, the technology and the pressures are quite different. Both Sampras and Federer are great champions. For me probably Sampras was the greater of the two, simply because in his era he had more challengers around, in the likes of Agassi, Ivanisevic and Federer himself at the later end of his career.

i think both of them are greatest player.i can not compared them because they never play in same time. of course they had a different opponents too. Sampras had great opponent like Becker, Agassi etc. And now Federer get several hardest rival like Nadal, Djokovic, Murray and so on.
