Rookie of the Year Predictions? Anyone? |
|
Before the start of the season it was looking like a one-man show with Blake Griffin way ahead of the pack. But with him being sidelined, the ROY trophy becomes a free-for-all scuffle! Now who would you pick as your ROY winner by the of the season? Brandon Jennings? Stephen Curry? or will Blake Griffin step up and claim the race back? Post your bold predictions for everyone to see.
Personal Prediction: Brandon Jennings, he's the starting one for the struggling Bucks so they will need him to produce. The only issue will be consistency as he will definitely get his minutes.

tokouchi (112) | 3 weeks ago | I agree, there are 2 clear runners on this right now, I think Blake can catch up and be that 3rd guy to contend for ROY honors. Griffin's only good side about being injured is that he made this ROY race a lot more interesting. I hope he bounces back well, I want to see the Clippers in the playoffs this year.

shadow41 (772) | 3 weeks ago | Kaman is playing extremely well for the Clippers right now. If he continue to play like this I think he will be an all star. Kaman plays the power forward role now and they're the same with Griffin. Maybe Griffin won't be their starting line up and I think it will hurt his chances to win ROY.

tokouchi (112) | 3 weeks ago | Although this maybe true, Clippers is a team that is groomed for Griffin. Kaman is a natural center and I believe that he will play center when Blake comes back. Kaman has always shown that he has the post moves. However the Clipper big man rotation is a guy short because the 4 spot is definitely Griffin's spot. I have no doubt in my mind that he'll start. Kaman goes back to being center, Camby goes back to being Kaman's reserve, and all is well.

shadow41 (772) | 3 weeks ago | I guess you're right. But Camby is a better defender than Kaman. I guess they will just sub Kaman or maybe they'll trade Kaman or Camby with a strong SF. They have lots of big man now.

2. lakerfanster (396) | 3 weeks ago | If Blake Griffin comes back soon they I would say he would be the Rookie of the year but with him out I really only see Brandon Jennings and Stephen Curry as the other candidates. I would go with Jennings over Curry as I think he will have more of an opportunity with Curry having to share minutes with another great scoring guard in Monta Ellis.

tokouchi (112) | 3 weeks ago | That is great point you made there. Jennings is the clear cut starter for the Bucks and he will be asked to produce whereas Curry is in a supporting role (as of now) to Ellis and Jackson. About Griffin however, the only question would be, can he make it in time before the gap becomes unmanageable?

| 3. cheezy_rockstar (25) | 3 weeks ago | It would still be Griffin when he gets back. Kenyon Martin also broke his leg in college and was still able to maintain the explosiveness way into his first year with the Nets. I think Blake Griffin can also do it. But if I have to pick a wildcard, I would go with Tyler Hansbrough. He has the same skillset as that of Griffin and he showed a lot of potential in his debut. With Troy Murphy sidelined, he will have more time on the power forward spot and would definitely have the chance to shine.

tokouchi (112) | 3 weeks ago | Interesting opinion. While I do believe Blake Griffin is the best player of this crop, what I do doubt is if he can make it in time. The race isn't gonna wait for him, he'll have to work double time to catch up. Hansbrough is a nice stud, but I think he is not as important a piece as Jennings is to Bucks or Curry is to Golden State. If he does get his coaches' trust he may give it a run, but I say he's a long shot at the moment.

5. boybato (438) | 3 weeks ago | I think Blake Griffin's got the solid chance of winning the ROY award. Though he still has to show up for a regular season NBA game, by basing it on his performance during the summer league, Griffin's got some serious hops and can really play and compete at an NBA level. He's got an NBA type of body already and it seems that his maturity towards the game is quite high. But Griffin's ROY campaign won't go without a challenge. As of now, with Griffin sidelined, Milwaukee's Brandon Jennings has wowed the NBA. Jennings is the leading scorer of all rookies with an average of more than 18 points a game. Though it's still too early to tell as to how Jennings would really do for the entire season, he's got great potential. Sacramento's Tyreke Evans is also up there among the ROY candidates. Though playing as a sidekick to noted scorer Kevin Martin and a bunch of veterans with the Kings, Evans is holding his own and is an important piece for the Kings puzzle. Stephen Curry on the other hand is playing average basketball which doesn't deserve any special attention over Jennings and Evans.
Among all 4, Jennings is playing in a perfect environment to win the ROY. With Richard Jefferson being shipped to San Antonio, Milwaukee is in dire need for direction. The Bucks doesn't have a superstar in the team with Michael Redd starting to silence down. With his speed, quickness, and smarts, Jennings has all it takes to make it big. Jennings is a big success story too. He left USA to play in Europe before making himself eligible for the NBA Draft. The rest is history as he's indeed making noise in the NBA.
Griffin on the other hand plays with NBA tested and proven stars Baron Davis, Marcus Camby, and Chris Kaman with sophomore guard Eric Gordon. Griffin's got to share some playing time and limelight from these guys. The Clippers is still Davis' team but Griffin's contributions would prove too helpful for them. Griffin for sure will be the Clippers' starting power forward and he can start from there. He's a 17 points and 10 rebounds a game capable player and can contribute solidly every game. If he can turn the Clippers' fortunes around and maybe help them get into the playoffs, the ROY plum is his for the taking.
Evans and Curry might consider stepping up some more to keep up with these guys. Though it's still too early, first impressions normally last.

tokouchi (112) | 2 weeks ago | Great breakout game for Jennings. That would be hard to top. He's broken a record in Milwuakee and was near to breaking a couple other records. 55 points in a game for a rookie is simply phenomenal. Hurts Griffin's chances on making a comeback run for the ROY race. I hope more surprises unravel as the season progresses. It's still anybody's ballgame.

| cinaj05 (1) | 1 week ago | I think Jennings have now the edge from all rookies IMHO because not only the stats that he give and record breaking performance but also they are winning. That's a big factor plus all star michael redd was injured and still they win games. I think Jennings will be a future superstar as also what rick kamla's prediction.

boybato (438) | 1 week ago | Exactly right, Brandon Jennings have made the Milwaukee Bucks into a solid contender this early despite of the fact that they've got very limited line-up after they gave Richard Jefferson away and Michael Redd sidelined with an injury. Jennings has been phenomenal and a revelation so far. It's quite a steal for Milwaukee getting him at 10 and get those kind of numbers and leadership.
I think most of Jennings' explosive start would come from his 1 year experience in Europe. He opted to play overseas rather than going college to further hone his basketball skills and to earn. At first, it was a gamble that never seemed to work as Jennings never averaged more than 8 points per game in Europe and played the role as a reliever. Though he showed some promise and potential, nobody would have ever thought that he would be this good now. 55 points for a rookie is not easy. Not even Michael Jordan was able to do that nor LeBron James. Jennings now holds the second highest scoring output by a rookie just 3 points shy of tying Wilt Chamberlain's 58 and is also the second highest scoring player in a game for the Bucks, just right behind Michael Redd's 57 points against Utah in 2006.
Jennings' credentials for the ROY campaign really look so impressive so far and if he continues such good showing and lead the Bucks to a winning record after the 82-game season, he can bag the award. Blake Griffin's gonna be a serious road block for him.
