Everyday is special

We all know people who keeps plastic covers on their couch in order to protect it. The thing about this is that many of these people may live their entire lives without having made contact with their own furniture! This is a rather humorous example of the human tendency to try to save things for special occasions, as if everyday life weren't special enough to warrant the use of nice things. Many of us have had the experience of never wearing a particular piece of clothing in order to keep it nice, only to have it go out of style because that occasion that we considered special enough just never happened.
It's interesting to think of what it would be like if we let ourselves wear our nicest clothes and eat off the good china on a daily basis. We might be sending ourselves the message that every day we are alive is a special day and a cause for celebration, and that we are worth it. There is something uplifting about treating ourselves to the finest of what we have. It is as if we rise to the occasion when we wear our best clothes and set the table beautifully, as if for a very special guest. We are more mindful of where we place things, what we are eating, and who is with us. Using the good china, eating in the dining room, and taking the plastic off the sofa might be an invitation to be more conscious of the beauty in our everyday lives.
If there are things we have stashed away for a special occasion,a new suit, that special dress or gorgeous pair of shoes, or perhaps an antique lace tablecloth, lets consider taking them out of their hiding places and putting them to use today, just because we are alive now to enjoy them. That very fact should be cause enough for a celebration. Who would agree?

Why have something if your not gonna use it, why not just buy a plastic couch.
Seriously what's the point in having something nice if your not gonna use it, none that I see.
The only thing I can understand putting away is good china, silver ware or table cloths for special occasions.

This happened recently in our home.
I decided to send our everyday china set to the op shop. It was still the complete dinner set, as we seldom break anything, but the plates were a little crazed and the cups stained easily. I started using the Living Art hand painted dinner set which had been our "middle" dinner set. The Seyei, a beautiful pure white, silver scrolled-edge set was kept for "best" (but seldom used)
Hubby was aghast at using the Living Art because it might get broken. My response was "so what?!" I like the set and thought we should get pleasure from it. I am 73 and he is nearly 80 so it was going to see us out anyway. We used it for a few months, but I knew he worried about it, so eventually we bought another set for everyday use. I like the new set, but every now and again, I set the table with the Living Art and enjoy it. I'd like to use the Seyei for special occasions but I'm not sure it will happen.

Hi cloudwatcher, Thank you for commenting and my wife is very much like that. She feels that since it's only us eating here today, there's no need to use our best china etc. I try to get her to see that everyday is special and we are as well. Lets enjoy the best we have as it may mean nothing to another. Blessings.

Oh I so agree with you, I am from Louisiana, and I had so many nice glasses, and dishes, special comforters, things you only got out and used if certain people came to visit, wanting to make it nice for them. They was packed away up in the top of the closet, or the top of the cabinet, lord that we would get them out and break a glass, they wasn't items that you would use everyday. Maybe once I found the opportunity to use them.
Now you know where all those items are? Floating some where out in the gulf from Hurricane Katrina. I now ask myself what was so important about these items that they wasn't good enough for me to use when I sit down to eat, or that comforter to cover me as I sat on the couch and watched a movie. Shouldn't I be the most important person in life. Why should you just save the beauty and the comfort for some one else. I know people that have entire rooms in their house that are blocked off, no one is allowed to go in them. They are for show or for special parties that they throw. They live in the basement game room, please tell me what is the use of having this if you can't enjoy it? When we got to Ohio and people at Christmas bought us nice things, instead of putting them up on the closet shelf, we are using them, there is no one that is more important in life than me. NO one that should enjoy them as much as me. The lace tablecloths, the crystal glasses, I come to realize these items are worthless if I can't enjoy them while I am alive. Some one said OH you should save that and give it to your grand daughter when she turns 18, I love my grand daughter with all my heart, but let her enjoy the fine things she gets in life, same as I am doing now. She is more than welcome to sleep under that comforter that was handed down to me when I got here. After all we might not be here tomorrow or fire could take them at a moments notice. Enjoy people while you are here on earth to do so. They are serving no one hidden away in a closet or cedar chest. Like mine they could be floating at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico and never been used so what did they serve being put away and not being used. We need to think of ourselves first and know that we are the most important person in the world and we deserve the best that we have.

i just find it funny to read this cause i remember once i said to my parents after buying a new set of sofa set that we should not take off that plastic cover so it will look new for a very long time. i loved it the moment that sofa set arrived in our home. it looks so wonderful. i like the yellow color. and being not so expensive one i know taking off the plastic it may not that look great after few days used, which what really happened. being made of not much special leather. anyways, they said it will be too hot to the skin if we didn't take the plastic off. we planned to put a cloth cover but it is not cheap to have a cloth cover made particularly for that sofa set. so we just didn't bother put any cover at all after taking the plastic cover off.
i like to use the expensive things at home too like the china set but i feel that it is not safe to use that and i don't enjoy using that cause it is quite heavy compared to plastic wares that i use. only the spoon are not made of plastic and the cups also.
but i like the idea of using the best of our things so we can appreciate and enjoy it more but sometimes i feel it makes me just feel sad to enjoy this beautiful things when nothing seems to be really beautiful happening in my life. wish that i have some special people to share it with. with no such people in my life i just want to have it stored in cabinets. if by some miracle some one came along my way, those things will be so useful. as for now it just gives such pain in my heart to use them cause it just reminds of what i lack in life. , so i just use ordinary things.

Hi hotsummer, You are special! Today is special! Feel that way now but also expect the best to happen and it will. I know that there has to be times when you wish to have someone special to share things with, but know that you are special right now and you will be more likely to attract that special someone into your life. Thank you for commenting. Blessings.

I agree wholeheartedly!
I am not the type of person who buys something and then keep myself away from using it because it is for special occasion only. I do not wrap my TV remote control with plastic, I do not keep my nice linens and beautiful bedsheets away and reserve them for guests only. If I buy plates, I would certainly like to use them!
Luckily, my parents are the same. I did not grow up with our sofa covered with plastic and the china we use are more beautiful than what we have in the display cabinets.
In addition, it is my principle
that the clothes, shoes and bags that I use everyday or often must be more expensive than those I use by occasion. I would like the jeans I use til its threadbare to cost more than a gown I would only be able to use in one occasion.

Hello Pose. It is true that people like to keep plastic covers on their couch to protect it as well as some other things to make them last longer. To some degree, the protected stuff lasts longer, but from some other ways, these beautiful things cannot show their real beauty with those coverings on them. Thus, to cover or not seems somewhat...
Well, I agree with you that taking them out of their hiding places and putting them to use today is a much better idea than just hiding them for their beauty and practical use...

Hi williamjisir, Thank you for that response and I can understand what you are saying. My point is that the only time we have is now, tomorrow is promised to no one, so we should enjoy the best that we have today. The other thing is we must realize that we are special and so is everyday. When we awake each morning, we know that we have have been given another day, and that is cause for celebration. Of course, it's also right to treat our friends well when they visit, use the best china that we have, but don't just reserve it for them, let's treat ourselves too. Blessings.

I like to think of the phrase: "Live everyday as if it were your last".
Everyday is a new day and should be treated special. Most of us are guilty of taking things for granted, that's part of us being human. I think that if we really did live everyday as if it were our last day on earth, most of us would be happier people.
In the end it's all about mindset. I agree with you.

Hello Pose. How true these things are. I think it is a waste not to use those special things we spend so much money on. Wanting to keep something for a special what ever what a waste. Everyday should be special cause God gave us this moment and He never promised another moment. I think that if everyone would stop saving those special things for that special time life would be a lot more enjoyable. We spend our lives living everyday as if it is the last day of our lives we don't have those special things for special times, Everyday is special to us. Thanks for a great discussion. Have a great day!

We live each day trying to make our lives better. We both live for today! I always have since I was a child. I was real lucky my mom didn't believe that things should be saved for another day. Mom always told us today was the best day cause God gave us another day. Have a great day Pose!
