Mine is Windows XP pro, with service pack 3 and the Operating system is not genuine one.Is it possible to restore my system to an earlier state?

owlwings (5276) | 1 month ago | This will only use the 'last good configuration' and it is not something that one can rely on at all. It is not a proper restore. Every time Windows starts it attempts to save a copy of the registry and, if everything loads as needed, it will mark that copy as 'good'. The trouble is that the registry is not a complete picture of how the computer looked at that point and, also, some problems may have occurred before the 'last known good' configuration was saved, so it cannot solve many problems (even when it works as it's supposed to).

Wordlinx (216) | 1 month ago | @hariffhaleel I tried to bring the system back with then help of last known good configuration. But the system is brought to the point where it was started previously and all of my problems are there still. I uninstalled the spy ware terminator already which had the system restoring option, I am not able to use that feature. As I have heard that the windows itself is having that feature, I tried to make use of this feature. Also I thought the system restoring option will create the restoring points automatically in a specified time interval or when some software is installed or removed from the system..But it seems that is not the case..Thanks for spending your time for trying to resolve my problem.

Wordlinx (216) | 1 month ago | I thought that the system will create the restoring points for every installation or removal of software/ update, automatically. That's why I removed the spy ware terminator few days back, which is bundled with the system restoring option. Now I am in the need of restoring my system to some other date as my system starts to malfunction..As from your response, it seems that restoring option may not work properly, as I have not created any restore point so far..At least hereafter I need to install some other software for this purpose. Thanks for your response to this discussion.

hora_fugit (744) | 1 month ago | Hi wordlinx, from your response in box 5 I hope you got your system restored. You may have seen it that, but still I wanted to add that there are system checkpoints too that are created automatically by XP in fixed intervals.:)

|
Wordlinx (216) | 1 month ago | After reading the responses, I made a search in the net for more details. As you have mentioned, the system itself is creating many check points in specific interval and also when we install or remove some of the software from our system. Also it seems,a check point is created before the start of update process of any of the installed software in our system. But unfortunately, all the changes can not be reverted again if the time span is more,it seems. We can get back the system, if we try to restore it withing 10 days. After that, we used to get some dll file missing error and only the desktop icons are available for some of the applications and they are not able to be opened or worked. Thanks for the response and the information.

owlwings (5276) | 1 month ago | It would seem that the best and quickest option would be to re-format and reinstall Windows.
Before you do this, of course, you should back up your data, make sure that you have the means to reinstall any applications and note down any configurations, bookmarks and other settings you want to keep.

Wordlinx (216) | 1 month ago | My system is not working well as I tried to remove of the third party tool bar from the program files of the C drive. As I had no option for proper removal for that particular tool bar, I tried to remove it from the C drive. I am not able to remove all the files entirely and also I am not able to install it again.Because of this, a small pop up window of the tool bar is always getting displayed whenever I start the system which is annoying me too much.As I don't have any software for restoring the system, I have not created any restoring point. Also, Also I installed and removed many browsers in the two days..Because of this, my system is showing many errors..That's I wanted to restore my system back to some other date..Thanks for yore response.

mrfdg1972 (510) | 1 month ago | Wordlinx, you have to delete your browser and install a new browser. If you use firefox remove it from C, then you can install a new firefox. But be sure you have a spare browser which you can download. I suggest you use Firefox 3.5.5 download it from mozilla.com

4. starscream (614) | 1 month ago | XP does have system restore option but people have very bad experience with widnows system restore so they try ghostimage or norton ghost images. Other than that you can repair installation from booting onto CD as well.

Wordlinx (216) | 1 month ago | Yes.. I am able to understand that the system restring option of Windows Xp will not help us much from the responses of other members also..Are the software you have mentioned available free of cost? If so, I will install them after reformatting my system, if I am not able to restore it . Let me search for the above software in Google. Thanks for the information and the response to this discussion.

Wordlinx (216) | 1 month ago | Thanks a lot for the exact information.I had spy ware terminator in my system and I removed it few days back, which is having the system restoring option. If we try to restore the system using the software, the same window will get opened and we need to proceed with this.I thought this window is the part of the spy ware terminator..Now it seems that this is available only with windows and the spy ware terminator is just triggering this window when we are trying to restore the system. With this window, we can create our own restore point also..Is it not? I have created the restore points when I had the spy ware terminator. I will restore the system after few minutes and again I thank you for the useful information and for spending your time to solve my problem.

rdsantos (182) | 1 month ago | i would recommend using third party back up programs or disk imaging. it is easier to revert back or restore system to its original. im currently using acronis true image home to create image of my computer and just save it on my back up partition. another thing is i also use deepfreeze to eliminate possible system changes or virus attacks that could potentially destroy my system. this is how i manage 70 plus computer systems here in our company.

rdsantos (182) | 1 month ago | and another thing using system restore will use hard disk space so make sure you delete old restore points after you created one if you don't want to run out of disk space. have a nice day!

|
|
Wordlinx (216) | 1 month ago | @rdsantos:
Thanks for the useful information..When I had the third party system restoring software, I did not have the habit of deleting the old restore points so far. I was totally unaware of the fact that it will also consume the disk space to a considerable amount. BUt now from your response, I am able to know the fact. But I am not sure of the deleting procedure of the old check points. But I think we can find out the option for that in the software itself and here after, I will delete the very old system check points.. To have the better restoration, I used to create the check points every day. It seems that it should also be avoided to reduce the disk space usage. Thanks for your response.
