I began going to church when I was five. I went to VBS at the invitation of Arta Jackson, a widowed neighbor lady. I loved it and I loved my teacher. I continued to go with Mrs. Jackson, every Sunday. Sometime later my Sunday school teacher came to our house to meet my mom. Soon Mom, my sister and brother started going to services, too. Mom was baptized when I was in third grade. When I was in the sixth grade, 12 years old, I decided I needed to be baptized for the remission of my sins.

When I told Mom of decision, she told me I had to tell Dad as well. I was afraid to tell him, because he was not a Christian, and was not very supportive of my mom in her faith. But when I did tell Dad I was surprised at his response. He told me I needed to be very sure that’s what I wanted to do, but that if I became a Christian I should be the best Christian I knew how to be. Maybe I should not have been so surprised, because that was his philosophy about everything.

At any rate, I remember Mom then calling the preacher to come talk to me about what I needed to know, to assure that I was indeed ready to make the step. Hank Tankersley brought Oral Farris, an elder in the congregation, with him. My mom put us her bedroom so we would have some privacy. The men sat on the foot of the bed. I was sitting on the floor with my back against Mom’s dresser. They asked me questions, and found that I was serious and that I knew about Jesus and His sacrifice for my sins. The following Sunday night, Hank Tankersley baptized me into Jesus for the forgiveness of my sins.

It was November, 1960!

That was a great experience and I admire you truly for remembering what happened many years ago. The Bible tells us that baptism is not for salvation nor for the forgiveness of sins because Christ when He was baptized need not the remission of sins because He is sinless. Baptism is the first step of obedience to your
Savior Jesus Christ. Baptism comes after believing or trusting Christ as your Savior and Lord of your life. Have a wonderful day.

I appreciate your kind words and encouragement. But may I urge you to read these passages that indicate baptism,as a faith response to the Lordship of Jesus, is indeed for the forgiveness of sins: Mark 16:15-16, Acts 2:38, Acts 22:16, Romans 6:3-5, Galatians 3:26-27, 1 Peter 3:21. Each one indicates the necessity of baptism in the re-birth process.

Erroll - I have to side with learn2earn on this one. Baptism is outward show of an inward change. God has already change our hearts by the time we step into the water. We do it as a proclamation of God's work in our lives, not as a work to be saved. The common argument for this is the righteous theif on the cross. Jesus promised him paradise despite having no opportunity for him to be baptized. The man's heart was changed as he saw the Lord for who he was and by that faith alone, he was given eternal life.

Thank you for the explanation for our friend who started the discussion. As I said, if baptism is for the forgiveness of sins and a requirement for re-birth, then Jesus is not a Savior but a sinner that needs forgiveness. Sometimes, we need not to dwell on what our preacher says but to study the scriptures ourselves and search if these were true, and interpret them in the context that the Bible is referring. happy

Yes, totally agree. Baptism is an act of obedience or submission. The Bible clearly states that Jesus is the way to heaven, not any other ritual be it biblical or not. The reason we practice Baptism is a form of showing that we really submit ourselves to the will of God. Jesus had the same reasons for being baptized, it was the will of God. I hope all of us will be enlightened with this issue.

"Welcome to the family!" That's what I would have said if I were there at that time. Of course it's impossible because I'm only 22 and that was way way back. It's nice to read people sharing about their faith and their experiences. Nowadays, these kinds of inspirational stories are what we need to change society that has little interest in God. Thumbs up for you for being bold in faith. To God be the glory.
