Your iguana's lifestyle

Okay - this may seem silly... but I want to know what kind of life style you provide for your iguana? And I don't mean what kind of lights, etc... I mean - does he/she roam the house or are they in a cage? Do they get personal attention time every day or do they go for days or weeks with no human contact? We had someone over recently who thought I was "ridiculously insane" for letting my Ralphie out of the cage - now, we can't do it all the time because of the puppy, the one cat and the toddler, but he gets out as often as possible Sometimes he lays on our laps or shoulder all night, others he roams the house... we pen the dogs up at night in the other room so Ralphie can have his time too. If we're spending a lot of time int he livingroom kitchen we'll open his pen. Sometimes he climbs on top and watches what we're all doing, ando ther times he explores the counter tops and curtains. Is this normal for an iguana owner or am I in the rarity? Thanks!
