Today at the grocery store

As some of you know I am having car troubles and it has been a very long week. Even though my car is running hot I had to go out today because I left something very valuable at the school and I had to retrieve it (fortunately it was still there) and I had no food in the house so I had to go to the store.
I went to the drug store first because I needed paper products and they usually have something on sale. I went to one located in a sort of strip mall type shopping area that also has a supermarket. Naturally, they didn't have any good deals even though today is payday and I finally have some money to shop with.
I got one roll of paper towels and one of toilet paper and some candy and then went over to the supermarket. In the very front were some pretty sunflowers so I stopped to look and all the flower bunches were three for $10. I haven't bought flowers in months so I picked out three bunches, got a little fruit, cereal bars, some cheese and something to drink (single tea and juice).
After looking at the wine and some other things I decided if I was going to pay those prices I may as well drive a few more blocks to Whole Foods which was kind of on the way home. I get to the check out and because I had forgotten to put the reusable shopping bags back in the car I grabbed one next to the checkout and put it on the belt ahead of my groceries.
The cashier asked if the bag belonged to me. I said I was buying it from them. Of course, I had to tell her to put the stuff in the reusuable bag. She dropped one of my apples on the floor and it got damaged. She says "this one is buss" and then she rang it up. I asked her which it was and then when I saw it had a huge gash and part of the peel was pulled back she repeated that it was "buss" and I asked why she rang it up.
She said she thought I would get another one to replace it waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay at the other end of the store, even though they were sold by the pound and she would have had to weigh the new one... So then she starts putting the rest of the stuff in a plastic bag and I say I want the stuff in the reusable bag which was why I got it.
She says "the cheese is wet" which it is not and if I wanted it that way... blah, blah, blah.
Those reusable bags hold a lot of stuff. They are sturdy and they can take a little moisture, not that any of my stuff was in danger of getting wet.
What is with these cashiers? Do they not get the purpose of the reusable bag? A similar thing happened recently at the drug store.

LOL. I would be complaining more than just about their ignorance to use the reusable bags. LOL
I really believe the cashiers think the bags are supposed to be used to go to the beach or an overnight trip. They seem to have a problem putting groceries into the bag whether you are carrying it or whether you purchase it.
I think the cashiers need to be briefed on what the products are used for and how to use them correctly.

Glad to see you back.
LOL. There is no way I want the task of educating the cashiers. We would have to take them to a kindergarten class and teach them basic respect and courtesy. What's wrong with these people? Didn't they watch Mr. Roger's neighborhood?

Mr. Rogers! YOU are HILARIOUS!
It's not like this was some young kid whose brain was on vacation! The woman was at least as old I am if not a little older. You would think she would have developed a bit more common sense and have more of a work ethic.

Her brain has been sucked out by the youth of today. LOL. I am sure she wasn't younger than you. She has confessed to being 25 with two children that are in their tween years. LOL. She has a husband that made her hair gray. LOL Since you are at the ripe age of 16 maybe she can adopt you too. I'm still in shock of you being over 30.

Hi C,
...this is terribly irritating. it's not only the importance of using the "reusable bag" that the cashier needs to know but GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. I had so many stories about rude and disrespectful cashiers...bad and poor customer service. Management needs to know this kind of attitude from among their staff.

True, perhaps I should write a letter. It's just that since the hurricane some places had difficulty even getting and keeping employees.
When I shopped at Whole Foods a little while later it was a completely different experience. I guess the people who work there do so because they want to.

Well, as it is I am not likely to go back to that store anytime soon anyway. The prices were a little high, the selection limited and it's not really convenient to my home.
There is a market closer, though it is really small, but I usually do my shopping in a different area where I am getting errands done.

you have to do it C. they must learn their lesson if not, cashiering or being into front line jobs is not for them.

I can understand as a cashier that after a long day sometimes your brain stops working but if something like that happened to me most of the time the customer jolts me back and I realize 'DUH!'... Now since the cheese is a cold item I would ask if they wanted it wrapped in a bag and then put in the reusable bag, but I'd use the reusable bag too! Heck I'd recommend a paper bag available for ice cream at most stores, or the "hot n cold" bags at wal*mart...
Well "buss" what does that mean anyway? Maybe it's a grocery store term, but who knows?

I can't say that I have never been lazy but it seems like more and more people are in their jobs. At a grocery store, I'm pretty sure that most of them do this, but you call for a customer service person, or a bagger and they go back and get a new item! Not the customer!
I had a customer who would bag his own items, it was always seltzer water or something like that, it was bottled either way. In any case, he'd get ten and put them all in one plastic bag.. not doubled! lol... but that's beside the point. My point is, I would bag my own items if the cashier wasn't understanding what I meant, or was wanting to bag it a complete unnecessary way.

She was trying to say the apple had burst open, but it wasn't like that when I put it on the belt seeing as how I had taken the time to pick through the apples and choose ones without bruises or soft spots.
The cheese wasn't that cold and no humidty had built up on the outside of the bag. She was just making assumptions. Everything was safe from any moisture that could have potentially developed on the way home except maybe the cereal bar box and it didn't matter if it got a little moisture (even though I could have packed so it wouldn't) because the bars are individually wrapped.

haha Canellita, that's a funny story, too bad it's a real story.
the best bag is actually the rice sack (plastic or cloth) that contain the 10kg to 25kg rice. Some people are so creative that they paint the rice sack, and make into reusable bag.
It's really hardy. I think those bags can live longer than us.

haha, you want to come here to carry 25kg sack of rice?
It's very good exercise if you and Mommaj can help me carry all the rice home.
I bet you two will lose 5kg per trip. My house is about 20 minutes walk away from the supermarket, and carrying 25kg of rice is enough to burn off all the fats accumulated from the last five years.

Odd that they sell them and yet the cashiers appear not to be up to their "going green" speed. And most places would have called out for someone to get you another apple. Sheesh, she was the one that dropped it.
It sounds as though you got a lot accomplished, though. Hope you can get the car fixed soon. I hate when my car needs repairs...expensive.

I just talked to Mr. Fixit. He got the parts this morning and he went to church where there was some program or something going on. He was changing his clothes to head in this direction though he is thinking I should bring the car to him because he can work on it better there, especially if it starts getting dark.

I feel sorry that it happened to you, Canellita. I don't know what is up with cashiers nowadays. But, I have noticed something, young adults, near the age 13-18, are all looking for jobs as they near university. I have asked a couple of them why they want a job. Their response is "I just want the money". Then i asked them if they're going to be kind or anything like that, and their response, was again "I just want the money". This shows you that some, not all, of the young workers are mainly doing it for money and do not care about their customers. I'm sorry to hear that this happened to you as well, as it has happened a couple times to me also. That was a nice story, however, it kept me staring at the screen:D

If this had been a young person I would have understood and been able to say "she does not know better." This woman had to be around 50 years old if not older. It is poor training on the part of the store but what can you do in a job like this one where there is regular turnover and people have no incentive to better themselves.

Wow!! Sounds like this Cashier was not very well trained or mannered in the Customer Service Business, and either her English was not that Good or she did not want to listen to you (the customer). It does annoy me when I go somewhere and am waited on someone like this. No matter where I am at, if they are having to wait on me in some way, they should show more respect and being polite, as those of us shopping there, or choosing to eat there, etc. is what is keeping them in Business as well. I would have definately been annoyed if it would have been me, and might make a mental not to self to not utilize her lane again when shopping in that store.

I try not to show any annoyance in a situation like this because it just inspires them to have an even worse attitude with you. This particular day I was tired and it was more difficult than usual.
