Macintosh "pings"

First I thought it was Firefox (what I use as my primary browser) or maybe Internet Connect, but I confirmed just now; neither were active when once again a received three pings. I cannot find anything about sounds that indicate any problem, though I know the earlier versions of the Macintosh systems documented unusual sounds while booting up indicate various problems.
Anyone using Mac OS 10.5.8 + know what it means when you hear three "pings" on occasion?
