Looks like Airline fares are going to increase.

I just read that it is predicted that airline fares or surcharges will increase by next spring or summer. U.S. Airways has said that it is going to add a 5 percent surcharge on all U.S. flights after the 8th of May. This surcharge is supposed to protect the airlines against rising costs of fuel and other costs. Other airline companies such as Delta, Northwest, and United are going to raise surcharges after the Superbowl. Since most airlines have lost money this year, they are looking for ways to add fees and surcharges in order to raise revenues. They are also starting to cut out unprofitable flights to reduce expenses, as well. There were a lot of flight bargains in 2009, but don't expect to find too many in 2010. The only good news is that these surcharges and fares won't stick if competitors don't do the same. Airlines still have to remain competitive if they hope to earn anything. Most of the higher surcharges are supposed to come during peak days such as Thanksgiving and Christmas.
So my fellow travelers, do you think we should purchase our tickets in advance before the fares and surcharge prices are raised?

I have noticed that the air fares in my home country have already increased. In January this year I took my toddler son on a flight from London to Cape Town. The aircraft was more than half empty. The air fares include a high surcharge and large amounts of airport tax. My advice is to buy a flight before the surcharges go up. There were lots of flight bargains in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008. Some airlines went out of business in late 2008 and in 2009 there have been fewer flight bargains. 2010 doesn't look like it will have many flight bargains. Rising prices of fuel has been a problem. Good luck with buying reasonably priced flights.

Yeah, I think to stay in business the airlines have to increase their fares and surcharges. Do you think there are still deals out there? It is getting pretty close to Thanksgiving and that is when they are expected to increase the prices. I don't know where to go, though. I almost want to jump on a plane and take a trip anywhere, because who knows when these good deals will role around again. Do you have any suggestions?

Good point. I guess we are going to have to choose to travel on those slow days next year. I can understand why the airlines are doing this. This has been a really rough year and with the economy the way it is, they have to survive or how will they stay in business?
