And I mean literally. We have these trees in our front and back yard. But the acorns have NEVER been this bad. There are THOUSANDS of them. you can pick them up by the handful. Night, day, and all day long. ping, ping, bang! Anyone else having a similar problem?

Hello ersmommy. We don't have acorns here, but your discussion about acorns makes me curious of getting to know something about acorns. I searched for some information on line to find that they are some kind of nuts that are edible. So you are having fruitful of acorns.

Nope not I! It's rare to find an acorn unless you get outside and into the parks or something alot. I bet my squirrels and chipmunks would be delighted with a bucket or two full if you'd like to send them on over

Hi, ersmommy1! No I can't say that I have this problem. I live in an apartment. But I do see many leaves all over the sidewalk. There is a big tree away from my front room window that leaks leaves of autumn colors. It is constantly falling. I know in my in-laws yard it was so many ants.. My husband had to stay cleaning the car out and spraying the car with ant spray.. The ants are bad where my in-laws live at.. I have been around acorns in the park and where we used to live at many years ago.. There should be a gardening tool that you can use to get the acorns up..

I'll trade you walnuts for acorns. The street I live on is lined with walnut trees that have also produced a bumper crop this year. We have bagged up quite a few and the squirrels around here are running themselves ragged trying to bag up the rest of them. We are literally driving on streets paved with walnuts, and they pop when you run them over. People are constantly getting out of their cars to see what they just ran over.
Have you ever read the book, My Side of the Mountain? I think the boy in that story ground up acorns and made a type of flour from them.
I guess I should be grateful for the bounty of walnuts..have you priced them at the store lately, ridiculous...watch for me on you tube..I will be the one wrestling the big red squirrel.

Everyone that has any kind of nut tree is experiencing this same problem. There are several factors that play into this such as the amount of moisture and temperature. I know on the east coast we have had a cooler, wetter summer than normal and this has allowed the nuts to develop.
My favorite expliantion is the old wives tale that if the trees are abundant with nuts then it will be a harsher than normal winter.

if you go to websites like motherearthnews, you can find ways to put those acorns (and other stuff such as leaves) to good use. You can actually eat acorns, but I am not sure about their uses. If you have that many of them, though, it may be something you want to research. I hear they have several uses.
