I read on the sciencedaily.com site that pregnant women eating licorice can cause babies to have lower IQ's and an increased risk for ADHD. As I put down my extra large bag of licorice and stepped away from it... I thought "What have I done to my child"! Have any women out there eaten licorice during their pregnancy, and do you think that is is a legitimate concern? Why or why not?

I believe that the connection between liquorice and early delivery has been noted since at least 2001. "Liquorice may ... boost prostaglandin production and thus hasten delivery." This news item is from 2001: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/1378652.stm . After searching for 'liquorice' and 'ADHD' I found the details of the story you saw (not in ScienceDaily but in Medical News Today) which says that the study was published recently in the American Journal of Epidemiology. It is obviously a follow-up of the Finnish study of the same women because it mentions that the children tested were 8 year olds (and was conducted jointly by Helsinki and Edinburgh Universities). In the original report it said that the "Finnish researchers found that women who ate at least 2.5 packets of black liquorice sweets, containing 100 grams each, per week were twice as likely to deliver before 38 weeks." The later report, unfortunately, does not give any statistics but merely says that "Women who ate more than 500mg of glycyrrhizin per week - found in the equivalent of 100g of pure liquorice - were more likely to have children with lower intelligence levels and more behavioural problems." Here is the second report: http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/166570.php
