Hi jugsjugs,
Buskers are not allowed to sing in the Streets anymore unless they have a Licence. Most of them because they don´t make enough money to be able to pay such a ridiculous amount have stopped doing this.
Is it like that in England?
It´s a great shame as a lot of them are talented and are only looking for money to get by like everyone else.

[b]Yes, I recall they were illegal in London, too, but most bobbies turned a blind eye to it so long as they didn't jam the pathway, I heard. I know no-one ever stopped any I saw.
Heck, how Scroogey is it anyway to prevent someone making a bit of harmless money during the holidays, while making life a bit brighter with music? Especially in the current economy! They should lift the ban at least near the holidays!

Hiya jugsjugs,
Well you are right but without going into Politics because this is where all these restrictions are coming from.
Around the Streets here all year round there were People from other Countries too playing Music.
A Russian Girl used to play here she played the Violin and she played it so beautifully that it would bring tears to your eyes. You could not fail to be moved by this wonderful Music.
There was certainly no playback here she only had a Speaker to make the Music go further.
She made a bit of Money but got a lot of applause and appreciation.
Since all this restriction thing has come about I have not seen or heard her again.
I just hope that someone has recognised her talent and taken her under their wing so to speak.
There was also a wonderful Guitar player who sang and played Flamenco with another lad have not seen him either.

[b]They exist here in Austin, Texas...but then, Austin, like Memphis. Tennessee, is well known for being musician-friendly. It's just heart-breaking, to me, to hear others here say their areas have lost the privilege of hearing music in the open air!

i haven't seen any in years-i'm not sure it's legal anymore because it's considered panhandling unless they have a permit.

hijugsjugs oh my what are buskers if I may ask, street musicians or what. this elderly American has an inquiring mind and does want to know? If we have buskers they must have a different name here in the US. odd we speak English too but you have so many interesting names that I do not know anything about. thats what I love about mylot in that I get to learn new things all the time
which is really great.

I checked on Wikipedia, and yes, buskers are street performers, and it likened them to also people who play at piano bars. When I visited Seattle there were buskers, I guess, street musicians in Pikes Market, and they say Robin Williams got his start that way.

[b]Ah, Jugs, you just sparked one of my most marvelous memories--singing with buskers just for fun! I don't know how many are there when it's not the holidays, but they were all over the place when I was in London almost 2 decades ago (all of December & part of January), in & out of the Tube. Often the music was very good! Everything from bluegrass to classical violin! What a treat to hear all that music! And since every time I went out (daily!) I found pound coins, I always tossed in whatever I found. The best time was when I got to sing with one band, & we sang "Here Comes the Sun." We were a hit--& they took home lots of cash!

Hi JJ,
There are lots of them but kids. They used to be in threes and fours--knock on our door, sing christmas carols and happy to receive even coins to buy candies. After a few minutes there will be another group of kids to do caroling because they learned that we gave something to the previous group, and more follows...

I am going to have to search that term. We do not have "buskers" so it is a new term. From context I am guessing it might be street musicians. We do not have them. It might be interesting to experience this.

I have seen a couple of them downtown, I never really thought of it, but you make a good point about the holidays. I woudln't say that I am seeing more because Christmas is near, but I think you are onto something as to why in some areas there may be more. Where I live there are always buskers downtown.

Buskers? While the word sounds familiar I can't say that it's familiar enough for me to be able to say that I know what you mean. What comes to mind are those people who are volunteering for the salvation army and who sings or whistles while ringing a bell in hopes to get money for the Salvation Army.
