What is happening with the level of education in the US? I was watching Hannity

on Fox the other day. I'm what he would call a "liberal democrat", however I do like to keep up on how the other side thinks and what they're talking about. It was a few days ago. Hannity sent some guy out into the street dressed in some kind of dog costume or something like that. He was asking random people on the street what the name of the Vice President of the US is. Nobody could answer. He even switched it up and asked if they knew who Joe Biden is. They all said they'd never heard of him! They were also asked to name the Speaker of the House. Not one of them could! Then he asked, to all the same people, who Angelina Jolie is married to. Every single person answered correctly! Now, this is a very sad commentary of the state of things in the US. Very sad that people don't even know who the Vice President of the United States is! If they aren't even aware of that little tidbit of information, how could they POSSIBLY make an educated decision regarding health care, taxes, the state of education in public schools or any number of things! What is going on?!?!?!

veromar do not base your opinion of our country solely on a few nincompoops that Fox interviewed, those are the people whose iqs are probably not very high. there are alot of well educated people in the United STates as well. And well yes I am sure they all know the vice president's name and a lot more. Most times when somebody is bemoaning how stupid we are, or vicious,or whatever word describes the situation about the U S it is not from a person born here or a citizen,no indeed.Sure we have our share of stupid people just as you in Argentina must have but the majority of people are quite intelligent and well educated. ask some Americans if you want to know about America not some dumb newscaster whose job it is to make outrageous statements to sell papers and television time.So my answer nothing is going on, we are not all a nation of dummies at all.

How quickly you judge. Just to give you some background.....I was born in Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines when my U.S. Marine Corps enlisted father happened to be stationed there on a U.S. military installation back in the 60's. As my father was a career soldier, we moved every 3 months to a year. I have lived in virtually every state within the continental U.S. I graduated from a reputable college in Missouri with a BA and a 3.8 GPA. I happened to make my living for a number of years as a news anchor and reporter for several East coast radio stations. I assure you that watching FOX News is not my only source of information. I merely cited it as the source for this particular discussion topic. I choose to live outside of the U.S. for many reasons, not the least of which is the direction I feel my country is headed in. It has deteriorated from the country I pledged my allegiance to every morning before beginning classes at school. (Do they still do that these days?) I have formed a lot of my opinions through simple discussions with people. Most can't even formulate a proper sentence, let alone carry on an intelligent conversation. My Argentine friends can name all 50 of the U.S. states and their capitals. Can you? Don't be so hasty in your judgment of people. The world is getting smaller every day and a lot of middle-age Americans are choosing to live outside the U.S. simply for the economics of it. Wait until you reach the age that you're supposed to live on your social security pension. Based on your rather rash comments, I'm guessing you're probably in your 20's. Got you beat there by a couple of decades. I know the U.S. I know what the U.S. used to be. I see the direction that it is headed. And, I know that the generations following mine are too apathetic and uneducated enough to keep it from losing it's former place in the world. Just one humble American's opinion.

"If they aren't even aware of that little tidbit of information, how could they POSSIBLY make an educated decision regarding health care, taxes, the state of education in public schools or any number of things" Or for that matter, I'll take it one step further... how is it people could have made an educated choice in the last election? Sobering isn't it?

I certainly don't blame teachers. I blame politics & politicians. I blame society for allowing our priorities to be dictated by the media. It's a very sad state of affairs. I've been watching this, or at least, I started paying attention to it, for a little over a decade. I'm turning 45 in a few days. Through my observation, I truly believe that "my generation" was the last to receive a well rounded education. Society's priorities were different. Getting a "good" education used to be foremost. My parents raised us with certain values. Those values are all but gone in today's society. Call me crazy but the "dumbing down" of America has been in the works for quite a while. With each new administration, subtle changes are made to the educational system, up through high school. Sourceseeker, as an educator, I am sure you know more about them than I. It's a very small part of a much larger problem. Each element lending sustenance to another to create the overall degeneration of American society. Yes. I agree that the media has a lot to do with it. A LOT. However, without the direction of parents that make parenting a priority or an educational system that gives a foundation for individual growth, we're looking at our future. There's a sobering thought for you, xfahctor!
