Pumpkin Pie! Lots of whipped cream! A traditional Thanksgiving dessert staple. But, have you ever tried sweet potato pie? Or do you change it up some other way? Like, pumpkin dessert bars? Or an entirely different dessert? How about sweet potato casserole? What's your sweet tradition for Thanksgiving besides cranberry sauce?
Share your sweet traditions with us (and recipes, too, if you have them)!!

My sister in law [I go to her house for Thanksgiving] makes usually the same things each year, though occasionally if she finds an interesting recipe she'll test it out. We usually just have turkey, glazed ham, party potatoes, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie, apple pie, and chocolate pie. Occasionally she'll try something new - last year she tried pheasant, and it was GOOD!

I've tried sweet potato pie, and I really liked it! It's a good change to the traditional pumpkin pie!
I've tried fried sweet potatoes, and also mixed with chunks of ham, and they were both good !

I found that I like sweet potato pie even more than pumpkin. They taste very much the same and yet there is a subtle difference in the ones I've tried. I think they add a citrus juice to them and it gives them a "fresh" taste that plain pumpkin doesn't have.

my mom used to make pumpkin and apple pies (because my sis didn't like pumpkin
cute story - last year my roomie's folks had a tenant at their place from Mexico. He had never had the sweet potato casserole (you know, the one with marshmallows) and he wasn't too sure about it when she put it on his plate. But, he bravely tried it and his eyes widened with pleasure and he was back having seconds. So, for Christmas, she had made it again and he was loading up on it!

We never ate the sweet potato stuff in my family - don't want say I don't like it, because I've never had it - it never was available until AFTER I learned of my corn allergy - and if you read the marshmallow package you will see that it has powdered sugar and powdered sugar has corn starch.

I'll bet!! Although you can have too much of a good thing like that!! We made ours with crushed pineapple, brown sugar, raisins, a bit of milk, salt and then topped with mini marshmallows. I loved it - but I loved the mashed whites with really good homemade turkey gravy even more, so I never overloaded on the sweets.

This is what we normally have for Thanksgiving: Turkey, Stuffing, Yams, Mashed potatoes, Green bean casserole, Corn on cob, Cranberry sauce, Rolls, Poppers, Long stem onions Cherry and Pumpkin pies with Cool whip. But this year I'm going to make this new recipe Roasted Asparagus. It sounds so good that I just have to try it.
Do you know what poppers are? They're fresh jalapenos, stems cut off and thrown away, cut the jalapenos in half and put on a sprayed cookie sheet, put cheese inside and then generously put barbecue sauce on top. Bake at 350 till the barbecue sauce burns a little bit then take them out and serve. YUMMY!! Depending what batch of jalapenos you get, is whether or not they'll be really hot or not so hot. One never knows until they taste them. lol
I pretty much make everything home made: Turkey, Stuffing, Yams, Mashed potatoes, Green bean casserole, (home grown)Corn on cob, Poppers, Cherry and Pumpkin pies plus the newest recipe, roasted asparagus.
Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!!

I know what poppers are and I do like them, but I've never heard of putting BBQ sauce on them. That's different. I could live forever without the green bean casserole, but the roasted asparagus sounds good. I know I liked grilled asparagus when I had it. Never had corn on the cob for Thanksgiving, but it does make sense since it's a native food like the turkey. Now I'm hungry. My daughter's making dinner for her BF and his dad, but she'll bring me a platter after they're done. I'm not going to cook just for me.

Hey Jerz! I don't think I really have any real Thanksgiving
traditions! I make the sweet potato casserole, the turkey with
homemade gravy, baked yams for me and others who don't really
like the casserole, some veggies, biscuits, stuffing (right
from the box-"thanks Stovetop"! And then we have a "store bought
sweet potatoe pie with lots of whipped cream and since yesterday
was my boyfriends birthday I made him a "Funfetti Cake with
white whipped frosting" so that will be offered for dessert too!
It will only be me, him and one of my girlfriend's who had no
place to go! My Mom's in Florida and so are her parents! I
want to wish you and your family and very Happy Thanksgiving too!

I made stuffing last year that was half "stove top" and half home made. It turned out wonderful. I called it "Accidentally Fabulous Apple Raisin Stuffing". It also had cranberries in it from the boxed dressing. I never bought celery, so I used cream of celery soup which worked perfectly!! And, it kept it so moist! I was so proud of that stuffing. My daughter and I are the only family left here in NJ, and she'll be at her boyfriend's for dinner, so it's going to be a little lonely. But, she'll be bringing me a platter from their dinner. I just won't have leftovers.

I'm so sorry to hear that you are going to be alone this
year. I know it's your first Thanksgiving without your
Mom. I am sorry that you have to be without your daughter
there too, but I am glad that she will at least be bringing
you a platter. Sending you hugs, Leslie

I don't know if it's a tradition, but we would always go to my uncle's house and eat there. He would always have Turkey, cranberry sauce, gravy, some great soup, crab, and lobster. There's probably more but I just forgot hahah. But it's alll goood tho! All good.

That's my kind of tradition - someone else doing the cooking!!! LOL But, crab and lobster sound a lot like the Italian holiday meals here in NJ. The ones I know always seem to have seafood with their meals as well as lasagna in addition to the turkey. That's quite the feast!

LOL Sorry to disappoint ya, jerz, but we don't do desserts at Thanksgiving. If I do, it's usually apple pie or french silk. No cranberries here either. yeck!
