How to let baby sleep better at night?  email this discussion to a friend?

My baby is now 9 months old, and he hasn't been sleeping well in more than a week by now. It may be caused by the teething problem, as he always bite his teeth gum during the night when he wakes up. He must be feeling really uncomfortable and always cries in the midnight. Even though I carry him, he still cries for awhile, and I need to find some ways to calm him down. Sometimes, he wakes up almost every hour in the night. Sometimes he cries non-stop, until he's really awake, then he's fine. He'll look around and start to smile too.

These two days, he's getting better as he cries less during the night and sometimes I just need to pat him to let him fall sleep when he is about to wake up and cry, but he needs more feed now.

I'm afraid he doesn't have enough quality sleep and this will affect his health, though he seems energetic during day time and plays happily while he is awake. I am not sure if it's still because of the teething problem, or he has nightmares or any other issues. This is the first time he always cries during the night. I have no idea how I can help him, besides carrying him, walking around, singing him song to make him sleep. rolleyes

Generally babies sleep better at night when they are three months old. We only need to do a few things like filling his tummy and making him feel comfortable when he feels sleepy. My baby is three months old and now he sleeps better at night. Just let him sleep when he wishes without disturbing his sleep cycle.

That's how it is when they are teething, they are so miserable. Try giving him some tylenol before bed and again when he wakes up. Read the instructions carefully and don't give him too much! It will help him sleep better without pain. I hope his problem goes away soon.

Could he have collic? Or is it just his teeth? Or are you spoiling him? I just finished posting a paragraph on this same topic from you. I can read your concern. I think if you follow those things I mentioned and just let him cry alittle bit (as you need to show him you are not going to baby him) then he should be fine. If it is his teething then the nuz-it should help as well. If it is collic it is a whole different story. If he wants you to baby and coddle him and you want to spend the time doing it- go for it! It will only get worse.

My baby is 10 month old .. And same problem we are also facing .. It is too difficult to make him sleep without doing all this....
But when he sleeps then looks like angel :) and that feels awesome.

my baby somethimes is like that. he would wake up in the middle of the night and would cry. I prepare milk for him and he would stop. so maybe he was just really hungry. i tried feeding him more than the usual serving before sleep time, but he would still wake up to feed again.

Well, get checked if the baby has any stomach problem, or any other kind of nasal congestion. These 2 can also cause discomfort to the baby.

Also, check this out as this may help:

Typical sleep at this age
By age 6 months, most babies sleep a total of 11 1/2 to 15 hours of sleep a day (between nighttime sleep and naps) and are capable of sleeping for long stretches at a time.

Between the ages of 6 and 9 months, many babies consolidate their daytime sleep into two naps, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Don't be concerned, though, if your baby continues to take three naps a day. Keeping consistent times for bedtime and naps will help regulate his sleep patterns.

Ready for sleep training
If your baby hasn't yet settled into a sleep pattern that fits your family life, now might be a good time to try some type of sleep training. Sleep training methods can help your baby go to sleep more easily, sleep for longer periods at night, and keep more regular hours.

Sleeping through the night
If your baby now sleeps for nine or ten hours at night, it means he's figured out how to settle back to sleep — a sign that you're raising a good sleeper.

If your baby isn't yet sleeping at least five or six hours straight, you're not alone. Many babies still wake up at night for feedings in the 6- to 9-month stage — though most are ready for night weaning, if that's what you choose. But babies this age don't necessarily wake up because they're hungry.

We all wake up several times every night for brief periods of time. And as adults, we put ourselves back to sleep each time — so quickly we don't even remember it in the morning. If your baby hasn't mastered this skill, he'll wake up and cry during the night even if he's not hungry.
