For the first time in years, my daughter and I are going to Carols by Candlelight tonight. This is run by the local Uniting Church. It is going to be held outside in the carpark so we are brining chairs.
The Adelaide Children's Choir are coming and Im looking forward to hearing them.
Plus, of course, Father christmas is coming for the little kids. It's going for 3.5 hours.
Years ago we went to the big city Carols by Candlelight which is quite spectacular. But it is so hard to get into that one, hard with car parking and very crowded.
So the local Carols By Candlelight will be better for us.
Do you ever go to Carols by Candlelight? What happens at your Carols?

I am not going anywhere or doing anything much this year except work. I usually go caroling but we do not have candles. I go with a church group, we divide into groups and visit shut ins and the elderly. This year we will also visit families we have been helping. We go back and sing for our supper at the church--chili and soup supper. We are taking the needy families their own chili suppers.

Probably what you are doing with the church group, is more community responsible than singing carols. By shut ins, I presume you mean prisoners?
Your group are acting on the Christmas spirit, not just going through the motions.
I think thats wonderful.
But what is chili and soup supper??

Shut ins are people who are too old or ill to get out of their homes or of nursing homes. A chili and soup supper is just that. There are big containers of hot home made soup, one of which is usually chili, a meaty soup often with tomatoes and beans seasoned with spices and peppers.

What is Carols by Candlelight? Is it like a Christmas Pagent or show? I have never heard of it before. I guess we don't have it here in the states, at least not in Pgh. where I am from. We might have something similar but call it something else. In this area we would freeze if we had to stay outside for that long. It's going down to 14 tonight. The only time people around here stay out that long in the winter is either to ski or a football game and then they are drunk.

I laughed at your drunk bit!!
Carols by Candlelight is held in every commuinty, small or large in Australia. This is where a group of people gather, it could be 10 or 10,000. They gather to sing Christmas Carols. Each carols by candlelight is sponsored by an organisation. Often it is Churches, but not always. Sometimes it is a council that organises one, or a community group. All carols by candle light are non denominational. Often schools host them too.
We gather on an oval, park, car park or wherever there is space. Usually there are candles to hold.
The bigger carols by candle light often have guest singers.
The one we are going to tonight, is hosting by a local Church and they are bringing in the Adlaide Childrens Choir.

I guess we don't have anything like it. The only thing that comes close is we have Carolers (I don't know how to spell it) that go door to door and sing Christmas songs. I have never lived anywhere that they did that but I know in some areas they do. Most people invite them into their homes for hot chocolate or something. At least they used to, I can't see many people inviting strangers into their home these days.
