Snow tires?

When (and how) do you typically put your snow tires on? Or do you not put them on at all? And do snow tires seem to actually HELP your traction during the winter and in the snow?
I personally just had mine put on.. about last weekend. Much later than when it started snowing, which was about a month ago - when it started consistently snowing that is. I find that they seem to sort of help a little bit, but not really.
What about you? What's your "routine" for putting your snow tires on? Do you do it after the first snow fall - or much earlier than that? And do you find that they actually help your car in the wintertime?

I think that for the most part they do make a noticeable difference. In some places it's even illegal to not have winter tires after a certain date. I just run a good pair of all season mud and snow tires on my vehicle and I find that they work just fine in deep snow and on icy roads. I'm too cheap to have two different sets of tires so for me all seasons are the way to go.
