So when you wake up in the morning with your eyes dotted with what we locals call "matter" you need to consult a doctor because you are sick .Now I have always been happy to produce mucus especially when something gets in my eyes because I know that the mucus will take it out but not so according my friend. Do you agree with her ?

I don’t have that in my eyes in the morning but my daughter does and we need to wash it out as soon as she wakes up. She has had this for years and I am quite certain she is not sick, I think it is just waste matter that comes out while we sleep like dried tears. I believe that if it excessive it could be conjunctivitis or pink eye but I’m sure that you would know if you had an infection. Normal mucus is nothing to worry about I would think.

Waking in the morning will very often result in 'matter' (in the eyes, nose, throat, lungs or whatever). It isn't anything to be concerned about. The fact is that, all through the day, our body is dealing with waste. When we are asleep a certain amount accumulates and this is quite normal. A few minutes on waking up will be taken up with clearing it ... that is what 'waking up' is about! I don't think your friend is right. A certain amount of 'clearing out' has to be done when waking and it is quite natural. There are ways, of course, of reducing mucous ... such as avoiding things that tend to produce it before going to bed.

I'm sorry to hear you are sick. I do have something funny to say about it though. I had a friend who was a doctor and we used to say that it was mucus and he would say "No, its snot". We just laughed, you have to read it a couple of times to get it.

I do not agree with her. It is nature's way of informing you that your eyes are infected or you have a cold or some foreign matter is in your eyes and sometimes it comes out.
