Pet birds and fishes --- Do you think that they, too, deserve their own freedom?

Some pet dogs are leashed while others are free to move around the house or in the yard. Some pet cats are caged while others aren't. Pet birds are caged and move around a small space. Pet fishes move in the water around a limited span of space inside an aquarium. We care and love all our pets. Have you, at one time, thought how it is to be restricted in your movements? Do you think these caged pet birds and fishes should be free in their natural habitat? Do you think that they, too, deserve their own freedom?

Most birds that are kept as pets have been raised in captivity, so they wouldn't know how to live in the wild. The same probably goes for fish.

I meant that they were born in captivity, although your statement about them having learned to depend on being fed would also apply.

Yes, that would be a point to consider having been born while in captivity. They might not be able to survive in the wild.

Hi, Bellis. Yes, some of them are raised in captivity. But, before they were captured, I wonder where they were snatched from by the catchers. I still think they were snatched from their natural habitat. From the time they were caught and placed in cages, they must have grown used to being "prisoners". That would make them "inexperienced" to be in the wild and we worry whether they will survive there if we free them. They may have been tamed already.

Well I believe they do but from what I understand they would not survive in the Freedom as they are not growing up in that environment and also the cold can kill them as they are not used to it so I believe they are better of to what they are used to

Hi, Gabs.
There are birds that were really "snatched" from their natural habitats and either brought home or bought from stores to become pets. I personally think that they should be left where they live and belong and should not be captured, in the first place. These birds have the tendency to adapt to their environment. It has been observed by the wildlife agency that there are birds from other countries that are visiting our warm country in certain times of the year. This might be one reason of the flight ... to stay away from the cold weather for a time.
For those that have been born in captivity, they might have a hard time living in their habitat but instinct and will to live is inherent among all living things, so, I guess, they can make it.

Freedom is the birthright of every living beings. But we human beings with the gift of super intelligence from the maker think and decide according to our whims and fancies.

Hi, yes, that is why He made us supreme over all other human beings. We should use our intellect in fairness and equity. We should use it in accordance with what He expects us to do. All human beings being created equal, man should not unduly take advantage nor oppress his fellow human beings. We should treat each other as brothers and sisters. We should not only decide according to what we want. We should decide according to our whims but should be done in accordance with the His wishes.

if you are going to keep a pet then you have to allow it as much space as is feasible. i think fishes will be ok if they have a big enough tank (after all some live in ponds where their space is restricted anyway) there is absolutely no reason to cage a cat and if the only way you can keep a dog is having him tied up most of the time then i think you should reconsider getting a dog. as far as small animals and birds go i have mixed feelings - on the whole if they are allowed out of their cages enough then it is not too bad. i have two small pets and i allow them out every day but they only go out for a short time before returning to their cage so i think they are happy with the amount of freedom they have.

Hi, Jb. We have pet dogs, cats, chickens and birds in the house. The dogs, cats and chickens roam around our wide yard therefore I am not bothered with their freedom. I am most concerned with our pet birds. When my late husband bought them from a sidewalk vendor, I expressed my opposing opinion about keeping them. Well, we got them in two pairs, anyway. It is only very recently that I again noticed the birds (whose cage is at the back of the house). I recently decided to free them. They should be happy with their freedom now but I still hear that they are just within our premises. They fly from tree to tree (we have 3 mango trees and 7 coconut trees in the yard). I am happy that they are free and still with us, in a way.

Yes! I think they too should have their freedom and live in their real habitat. I think fishes in aquariums, birds in cages and dogs tied forever are being punished and deprived of their right to live a normal life.

I think so, too. I feel for them that I see in captivity. I always liken them to people who have done wrong and are subjected to punitive conditions in order to reform, just like the prisoners. These animals have not done any wrong, in the first place. They are being held captive mainly to please the pet owners. I always think that they should be freed and released to their natural habitat.
