Hi friends! I observed that Christmas is written as X-Mas. Is there anything particular point behind writing so or is it just an informal way of writing Christmas? Wish you a MERRY CHRISTMAS!! Have a great time! Happy Mylotting!

it's an abbreviation to make writing it slightly quicker. i think an x is used because it is the closest letter in english to a cross but i am not certain of this.

It is actually because 'criss-cross' is a common expression for a diagonal crossing of something. Since 'cross' means '+', then 'criss' (or, strictly speaking, 'criss cross') means 'x' and so "criss"mas is 'x'mas. A few people today wish to remove the 'Christ' from 'Christmas' and so use the shortened form but originally it was jocular and used as a marketing technique (to make people look twice, perhaps, or simply to make it take up less space on show cards).

I think this is an abbreviation. As Jesus Christ is synonymous with cross, it becomes a natural abbreviation for the word christ-mas means christ for cross = Xmas. This is what I think so.
