The Christmas Spirit - all year round?

During the month of December there is a lot of talk about helping people less fortunate than ourselves. There are boxes scattered hither and yon around the cities for people to fill with toys for needy children. There are food drives and clothing drives. People flock to the soup kitchens to put in their time there. There are wish trees at the malls and Walmart for people who want to buy a gift for someone who might not get one otherwise..... My question is where is this spirit in the middle of July? My mom started collecting toys the week after Christmas last year and by this Christmas she had 25-30 gifts that she donated to the Toys for Tots program. But what about giving toys to those kids in the summer? Great places to donate toys all year are domestic violence shelters and child protective services. What about feeding homeless people in February? Where does the Christmas Spirit go once Christmas is over? Be honest. Are you a Christmas charity worker or do you try to give all year? My pet charity is the local domestic violence shelter (by "local" I mean, wherever I am living at the time, not just the local one where I live now).

I think the Christmas spirit comes at the end of the year because its a time to reflect and plus people get bonuses and they want to give from their heart. I know that people need help all the time, we are a needy people. I'm happy that you give all the time, you see it on a more personal level than most of us ever will. Thank you for that.

I dont know where the sprit is during the summer but you know I never even thought about it. But I guess during christmas is a time of giving and spending time with your family and when you see homeless people you feel more bad for them especially knowing how much your going to get for christmas thats my only explanation.

Just like for you, the charity that our playgroup donates the most to is the local domestic violence shelter. We always try to do something really special for them at Christmas. By this I mean that few weeks before Christmas we will call and find out about how many residents they have at the given time. For all of the women we will prepare a gift bag for each of them that has pretty much the same things in it. For the children that are living there at the time, we will fix each of them a Christmas box with toys that are appropriate for their given ages. However, we are constantly taking them other things throughout the year. Honestly, there is nothing that they don't need because in addition to having the families in residence, they also help the women establish new residences as well. We have donated everything to them from money to baby items to household items as well. They are always so very thankful.

All throughout the year, we collect stuff we wont be using anymore; clothes, shoes, toys, etc, and ready them so whenever someone we know would go to the province, we would just have him/her pick up the stuff we prepared or have those stuff delivered to them. they'd be the ones to send them to the province to give out to relatives, neighbors and anyone who needs them. we've been doing that for as long as i remember. We send stuff when we can especially during Christmas. it's always a good feeling doing that because it's not just earning more space at home, we get to help other people. Instead of throwing our pre-loved items, we get to give them to people who might need and want them more than we. and i am sure they can put them to good use. less garbage and more happiness to others!!! it's a win-win situation for everyone. :D
