What Makes You Think Christmas Is Over??? It's Only Just BEGUN!

Somehow things in the last few decades, at least, have gotten muddled about Christmas. It may have something to do with the businesses which begin advertising Christmas in AUGUST (grrr!), or it may simply be that modern folks have separated Christmas from its faith origins. Or both. Or perhaps there are other reasons, but the point is, I'm puzzled at why, exactly, people have started thinking Christmas season begins the day after Thanksgiving, & ends at midnight on December 25th! That's not the Christmas season, people! That's more Advent! In fact, a lot of folks so confuse the 2 seasons they sing Christmas carols in Advent season & the other way about! Now, don't mistake me; I love the idea of keeping the spirit all year round, but I also delight in what used to be called "The 12 Days of Christmas!" Some people just think of that phrase as a puzzlingly long song, & maybe even annoying. In another thread, perhaps, I'll detail from where that song comes, & what it really means, but for now, I'll stick to the facts about the dates of Christmas, & why so many are getting them wrong. TWELVE DAYS. They begin on Christmas Eve, & end on Epiphany, "the first public showing of Christ." THAT by the way is the right time to sing the "We Three Kings of Orient Are," as they didn't come 'til some time after the birth of the little King. But back to the dates. I first noticed the mix-up about the end of Christmas when I noticed that on the second day of Christmas, I saw Christmas trees tossed in dumpsters & lying at curbs everywhere! I was stunned! Why would people throw out their trees so soon? As a little kid, I bonded with the trees. I would hate to see them thrown out, & would sometimes imagine they could come back inside. But of course, since they got no more water, they'd turn brown & the needles would fall off. Inevitably a few strands of icicles would remain, too tangled into the branches to remove for the next year, so finally I was left with the scratchy, bare-limbed corpse, glittering on occasion from a twinkle of icicle. It seemed sad, to me. I only lost that sense of sadness when I learned that birds used the trees to build nests, & other wild animals would house in them sometimes. But now, I'm more disturbed by the lack of knowledge about when Christmas arrives & leaves, because it speaks volumes about the ignorance prevalent today about the famous "Reason for the season" than about anything else. The Church has not been doing its job! Why is there so much ignorance? Did you know when Christmas season took place before reading this thread? What's your take on this? Happy third day of Christmas, everyone! Maggiepie MERRY CHRISTMAS! FELIZ NAVIDAD! BLESSED NATIVITY!

Yes, Our family when I was younger never threw out their trees until the middle of the 2nd week in January. I myself don't even celebrate anymore.. not really .. I usually end up working on Christmas and I have way to many animals to bother decorating my house with a tree and such.. we are a house full of Bah-humbug-ers.. :-) It is very sad how much Christmas has deteriorated in my family since my mother passed on.. she did so much, for everyone.. Me, My aunt (her sister) she used to do all her shopping for her or it would never get done because she is a horrible procrastinator (or is that A good procrastinator if you excel at it - I always wondered that), my brother... she just did everything for everyone. But now- my aunt gives -no gifts (and she is the only one with money...lol) At least my step father still puts up a tree for my little brother who is almost 17 and tries to keep a tradition going.. but with only the 2 of them it's not as cheerful.. I couldn't even afford to get my brother much this Christmas because of the economy's effect on my household. I hope it turns around soon. Merry Christmas to you too!

Minx! I'm so glad you wrote!! I was just in my profile & discovered you had, after all, answered my post re GM! For some reason known only to MyBot, your reply wasn't in my email! But it was there in my profile! I'll never understand this place, I swear! I promise I'll send you a fanfic link or 2 when I get time, but for now, I'll just answer this post. I still celebrate Christmas happily, as my focus isn't on the trees, decorations & presents, but on God. Sure, all that other stuff is fun, but it's secondary. Like "Blair," I'm more attuned to the spiritual side of things, so maybe it's just that I'm happiest with the season's cerebral side. On my giggle giggle yuk yuk chuckle chuckle yik yik har de har "salary"...I hafta be! I haven't got money for all the rest of it! So maybe if you just concentrate on the family & friends, you'll have something more than bah humbug to say...(BG). For the sake of your happiness, I hope so! But if none of that helps, try picturing GM decorated with lights & tinsel under your tree, & see if that doesn't elevate your mood! Happy new year, hun! ^5! Maggiepie MERRY CHRISTMAS! FELIZ NAVIDAD! BLESSED NATIVITY!

I don't agree with Christmas things being thorwn to the curbside. Especially if it's before Christmas. I don't understand why people would just throw them out. Ithikn if you put out Christmas stuff for the holiday you be able to take it down after then holiday. Don't keep it up all year. Next year it probably wont work then you still have the lights up and makes thier house look like the GHETTO!!

I think I wasn't clear. What I've seen has been thrown out after Christmas Day, not before Christmas. My puzzlement stems from why they think Christmas Day is the end, rather than the beginning of the season. And the things they toss out (tree included) don't stay there long--they're gathered up by the trash service a day or so later, usually. So it doesn't look bad. Actually, with all the Christmas glitter, it tends to make the trash look rather festive! Maggiepie MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR!...^..^

I kind of look at it that way too. Christmas is never over until you make it over. I still have my decorations up. I will not take them down until I feel like doing so. I have my outside light decorations still up also because we have a little snow now and it looks pretty.

Oh, how I love the lights! This is one of the rare years I haven't been able to go out around the city & look at them. And they are sooo pretty! Like you, I leave my lights & decorations up until I have to run my air conditioner... Here's to Christmas through the whole season--if not all four! *clink!* Maggiepie CELEBRATE ALL 12 DAYS OF CHRISTMAS!

Awww...gee. That's kind of sad, Auntie! I wish we could celebrate such a sweet season every day! Did you try to do too much, or something? A lot of folks make that mistake, & they just wind up drained at the end of it! Next time, try taking it easier. Just relax, & enjoy the season! Maggiepie MERRY CHRISTMAS! FELIZ NAVIDAD! BLESSED NATIVITY!
