The End Of An Era |
| |
| I saw President Gloria Arroyo early morning walking (and greeting local residents passing by) just outside the gates of The Mansion House here in Baguio City and I realized this is her last Christmas holiday as a sitting president. I remember during EDSA Dos when she was much younger and the country's hopes were placed squarely on her shoulders. Seeing her face up close now, older (but not wiser), is a stark contrast to what she looked like in 2001. For a moment I kinda felt sorry for her, as a person and not as a political leader, kinda like how I felt as a teenager seeing the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos board a US Air Force chopper to Hawaii, you feel sorry for the person but not for the politics he/she represents. And I feel sorry for us all - of the lost promises of EDSA 1 and 2, and all the missed opportunities at greatness. So when January comes, the Philippines will essentially begin the countdown to the final days of the Arroyo Administration. Whether she likes it or not, for the next few months, she will no longer be the main newsmaker. Our tv sets, radios, local websites and newspapers will now focus more on the presidential candidates for the May elections. Gloria will fade away from the political consciousness of every Pinoy (hopefully into oblivion) and the whole circus starts again. Have you guys already made your mind up on who you think deserves to sit in Malacanang? Whoever you wish to support for the coming elections, I hope you'll be able to see past the rhetorics and propaganda and choose the right leader for this country. Otherwise next Christmas, a lot of us would be musing again over lost chances and missed opportunities. Happy new year everyone. ^^ ~ sb | | | | | |

| | Hi, dolce, you can still call me by my old name: spoiledbrat802 (or sb for short). Lost my old account, that's all. ^^ The prime minister thing, I don't think it's gonna happen. Politicians are fickle. Once we elect a new president, all the GMA loyalists (and other oppositionists) will jump on the new president's party in a blink of an eye. So cha-cha is not gonna happen either way. Happy new year! ^^ ~sb | | | |

| | Unfortunately I don't know who to vote for. Besides, mine would be only one vote. BTW I did vote for GMA. I am not convinced either that I made wrong choice. No one is that strong enough to change a country very fast. I don't know about politics maybe that's why I don't dislike GMA that much. I only know she also made some good things, I don't know about the bad, I am not following the issues either bec I can't comprehend things and know only what's directly affecting my life, like jobs. I believe her administration provides trainings for people so that they can get jobs so that the number of the unemployed be less. Even though they may not be very good or stable job, still it's better than nothing. I look forward that 2010 would be better, not only because we will change president. In fact I am barely thinking about it for now but I hope no one will call me irresponsible or only thinking about myself. And, I look at it differently too. I don't see her as a failure as what happened with Marcos being sent to Hawaii. But I am not GMA fan either. She is just a normal person with big responsibilities. | | | | | | |

| | I voted for GMA too. It was the most sensible thing to do at the time considering the other alternatives (FPJ, Bro. Eddie, et al). And I do agree with you that GMA isn't all that bad. When the worldwide economic recession hit, the only ones that were affected badly here were companies that were direct subsidiaries of American financial firms that went bankrupt. And I hope history will treat GMA fair - her economic policies were actually outstanding. I guess I am more diappointed in us, collectively as a people, at our failures to seize the moment at greatness. We failed to capitalize on Edsa 1 and 2, and we keep electing idiotic people. I hope we will do better in 2010. ^^ | | | |

| | Yeah, I guess I get what you were trying to say in your original post now. Not that you see her as a failure, but the same feeling of disappointment you had with good starts of Marcos (if you did see him having good start because my late father who is a loyalist, says he is a hero) and later the victory of having a dictator out. The same with GMA and the dreams others might have. After the term is over, it doesn't feel or look at all victorious. I sometimes get sad too and even depressed when there seems to be no good opportunity to make our lives better. But yes I hope somehow people get wiser and especially don't lose hope. | | | |

| | As of now I'm not yet decided who I'm going to vote. She is running again and her power is still present she can manipulate her ally their in the government. I want change to our government and to our country. During Arroyo's term there are many scandals, corruptions and controversions up to now is not yet resolved. | | | |

| | I don't know why I had this feeling that it will not be the end of the Arroyo regime. She still have five months in her hand and the support of the executive, legislative and judiciary. And even if she stoops down gracefully as President, I really think she will wield more power as representative of the 2nd district of Pampanga. But I'd rather be proven wrong. I really wish that the election will proceed smoothly and the people's voice be heard. And if GMA became congresswoman, may she continue to contribute for the betterment of our country and not the other way around. | | | | | | |

| | eichs, I think your fears are unfounded. If ever she becomes an elected representative of Pampanga, I don't think she will wield that much influence over her fellow congressmen. She doesn't hold the government purse, in fact she'll be just like everyone else waiting for dole-outs from the new president outside of their allocated funds. The thing about Philippine politics, power is influence - and presidential power is more influential than congressional power. I guarantee you when we elect a new president, it will be a season of balimbings again - even GMA loyalists will leave her for the new president's bandwagon. The new president will hold greater influence than a congresswoman Arroyo. | | | |

| | We'll see soon enough after the elections, eichs. I'm not saying your gut feeling is wrong. I'm just saying it will be difficult to have the same power again from a congressional position, as compared to her presidential influence now. So we'll see. ^^ I'm in no mood to debate - just got home after spending 6 hours in the hospital (asthma attack), but boy I'm really glad you're around to liven up my discussion while I was away. Happy new year to you and your family, eichs. ^^ | | | |

| | We belong to a third world country as described by many political and economic analyst. As one said, we deserve a corrupt president because we have a part in its failure. We are a people who wants to always criticize but doesn't do anything to be of help. I think that whoever will sit at the Malacanang Palace will never solve the problems we are facing because people will start criticizing him again. I think that what we can do as citizen of this country is to pray for our leaders and cooperate with the good programs they have instead of having a critical mouth. | | | | | | |

| | We deserve a corrupt president? But did she really emerged as the choice of the people in 2004? And we deserve a corrupt president just because we do nothing but critic and we are not helping? Come on! Do you really believe that? Do you really think anyone deserves a corrupt leader? Yes, I do agree with you that we should have more heart to do what is right in our little way than having a big critical mouth. But besides prayers, what else can we do when the taxes we are paying advance are being used to build the mansions of Ampatuans and to pay the enormous expenses of junkets in the President's unending tour? What help do you really expect from ordinary citizens who continue to obey the laws but can never get their fair share of justice from the wrongs that their leaders continue to perpetuate? When we elect someone to be our leader, we are not expecting him/her to solve all the problems of our country. We just want them to ensure that the basic social system in the country is functioning. But what do we got? We have congressmen and senators who lust for the pork barrel fund and busy themselves doing projects in their areas instead of reviewing and making appropriate laws. We have an executive department who suddenly became the masters after taking oath that they should be public servants. It's indeed a crazy country we got here right now. Yes, we need prayers. Yes, we need to be strong to stand for what is right. But, we also need leaders who will not take their public position as a means to gratify their personal needs. | | | |

| | I think the problem lies herein that we do not respect our president with the power allotted to him or her. We have put her in a great position through our very votes, we should at least be supportive in her endeavors whenever we believe that it is appropriate for the country. We have to be fair in our judgment whenever we critique. This doesn't happen often. Why? Because GMA already has a terrible track record. But when it started, during EDSA II, taking over Estrada, she was the hero of the masses, the second Cory Aquino, the daughter of Diosdado Macapagal. Nowadays, due to the numerous issues surrounding her, people have stopped trusting her administration. That is understandable. The problem is that whenever she tries to rectify it by making good decisions, she is barraged with criticisms left and right. It's one big vicious cycle. But this does not mean we deserve a corrupt president. No one deserves to be plundered, stolen from, and lied to. Despite criticisms, a good president must always attempt to do the right thing. | | | |

| | I think it's too early to fix our votes of whom to cast worth voting. I am still looking for a realistic program if there really is. our problem to global warming was never sited by any of those aspirants, if there is, what have they done to lessen the problem. i know our country is really small compared to others but there are thousands of islands and millions of people compacted in it. There is no aspirant who attempted to convince us and make or pass a law to completely remove the sale and use of cigarettes as a "hobby". I was looking for this topic to be added in the campaign since last year but it seems the aspirants are completely blinded by the power they are to inherit when seated in their respective positions. sb, don't feel sorry for the president or even the previous presidents, instead, feel sorry for the future generations. what becomes of them and us if these aspirants and so-called leaders of the country won't even realize what good action to make even not yet on position? | | | | | | |

| | Yes, as the new year ends, and a new set of officials will come up in the next year's elections, I really hope that we will all vote for the people who have the will enough, the idealism, the honesty and the integrity to keep this country going. Sad to say that the previous Arroyo administration has not left a good impression upon the Filipino people, but we cannot say we have wasted an entire political regime. A lot has happened during the entire stay, and we have moved through it, learning a lot of things. I hope we apply the things we have realized in searching for the next leader of the country. Already we are in the right track, as more people have applied for voting registration than before. We can only do our part and hope for the best. Personally, I haven't been able to choose who I am going to put in my vote for. I really want to wait for the debates - the real showdown on who's the smartest, who's got the ideas, and who's really willing to serve the country. I'll be looking forward to watching that one. | | | | | | |

| | Hello wisdom, I thought it was the end the Gloria era. until a few days ago that he is actually running for congreswoman seat in Pampanga, probably the first President who ever run for a small government position. Feeling sorry isn't gonna do us any good, i believe Moving forward is the only solution for us to do the right thing for the country. people did what they knew was right, and Erap did somethign illegal during his Presidency, despite the fact that some had actually apologize to him. For now, i have been active in gathering usual information about the Presidentiables. you can check my topics about it since i got obsessed with it for a week. got links with their debates in youtube too and some platforms, which are not complete. Have a great day. | | | | | | |
