Curious about Google Earth

So to make a long story short hubby won't let me drive to the areas My Father was raised in as they are the kind of areas you don't go to unless it's accompanied by a man, a cell phone preset to 911 & only during day light hours preferably in winter. So there's an update on Google Earth and I can finally see the houses, though I can't read the house numbers I'm really excited. But my question is how do they obtain the street level views of houses? I know it's not live or anything.... but do they send someone out and have them do a 360 video/pic every so many houses? Or can they really see that via satalite?

The way that I see it, they have to have people that are hired to video tape or photograph things on the street level. If you pay attention to the pictures or street view of an area that you are extremely familiar with you will be able to tell that the pictures are not really recent. For example, when I am looking at my mother's area I can tell that the picture is a couple of years old because of the cars that are in her driveway. All in all, I think that it is neat that there is that resource available, but I'm not particularly sure of the practical applications of it.
