Have you ever stood for election?

Have you ever stood for elected office, whether local or national? If so, what made you decide to stand? Did you make the decision on your own or were you encouraged by others to stand? How did the campaigning go? Whether you won or lost, would you say it was worth the effort?

I helped out with a local election campaign last year, and I let myself get talked into running for a council seat this year - that's not definite yet, being inexperienced I could fail to get on the ballot by stuffing up the paperwork etc. Even if I do get on the ballot, it's a daunting prospect for a first-timer, but I'll do my best to run a competent campaign.

I thought about running for office when I was younger, and thought the old coggers didn't know what the heck they were doing. Now I am an old cogger, and I know the old coggers don't know what they're doing, but neither do the young ones. Politics are too mean spirited for me to ever think twice about running for an office.

I know what you mean. The basic problem is that no-one's fit to be in charge. It's a full-time job running your own life, let alone trying to solve other people's problems for them.
