A beautiful bird with a weird name  email this discussion to a friend?

Here is a picture of my hairy woodpecker! I have no idea why they call it that, he has feathers instead of hair. But he's a very pretty bird and visits the suet feeder every day. That makes 2 kinds of woodpeckers I've identified this year and there is a third one but I haven't discovered what he is called yet.
Do you have any idea why this would be called a "hairy" woodpecker? The name is rather laughable. lol

Hi! The most birds become their names because of some mark on their body or head, and I don't know why your bird is called so. You better check it good for some special marks!lol

The person that named it probably was drunk when they named it and thought that it had hair instead of feathers.

LOL! lol That's as good an answer as any, because I don't understand half the names they give birds. He certainly is pretty, if not hairy!

Hello my dear dragon.

I looked at the picture and while i don't know this breed either, like i did not know the one from yesterday, i am guessing that the name comes from the fact that it looks like she has a lot of hair on her back.

myLot reputation of 97/100. dragon54u (15681)  3 years ago

That could be. It could also be, like the person before you said, that the watcher was drunk when he named it! lol

Hi dear,

I am familiar with woodpecker, brown in colour and have a yellow crown in their head. I never seen the bird you have added with the discussion. May be woodpeckers are different types and they have given the name according to identification marks. Since I have not seen the bird I can’t guess what will be the identity. Anyway I agree with you, the bird is really beautiful.

myLot reputation of 97/100. dragon54u (15681)  3 years ago

We have a lot of different woodpeckers here. The red-bellied which I posted about the other day that doesn't have a red belly but some red on its head, this non-hairy hairy woodpecker, a red-headed one that really does have a read head and a lot of others I'm not familiar with. I saw another type yesterday but he didn't stay long enough for me to get a picture.

One of the reasons I love winter is because of all the beautiful birds!

I really enjoyed seeing the photo of the hairy woodpecker that visits your garden daily. I haven't seen any woodpeckers in my locality. I do have a robin that eats food in my garden. Due to the snow there hasn't been a rubbish collection for two weeks. I have seen a rat in my garden. He or she is after my garbage. I am looking forward to having my rubbish collected on Thursday. If it snows again the trash lorry might not turn up. Some animal names are amusing or laughable.

I had heard that the UK was having trouble with snow. Here, it is a yearly occurrence and the trash trucks are huge, they don't seem to have much trouble getting around. That must be very unpleasant to have your trash hanging about! The rat must think he's in heaven! lol

I love Robins, but they've left for the year. They will be back in the spring and I'll be glad to see them!

happy oh thats beautiful. are those his colors? i always thought they all had the red knot on their heads. guess im wrong. i've only seen 3 or 4 real ones in my lifetime. he does look kind of like he has fuzzy marks looking like hairlol

myLot reputation of 97/100. dragon54u (15681)  3 years ago

This one has no red on him! I'm surprised, because I saw a black and white one last winter with a little red stripe. It's strange how many woodpeckers have red on them, isn't it? This one really looks nice in the sunshine!

Another bird that is misnamed is the Bald eagle, it has a full head of feathers. I could see if the named a buzzard bald but not the eagle.

myLot reputation of 97/100. dragon54u (15681)  3 years ago

I can kind of understand the "bald" in eagle--to someone without binoculars it might look as if it is bald. But any idiot who has spent time outside like birdwatchers (and namers) knows that birds aren't bald. lol

Thank you for sharing the picture of the hairy woodpecker. They are very similar to the Downy Woodpecker, which I will post with this comment. Not sure why they call some of the birds they do but I love woodpeckers and I have seen both the Downy Woodpecker and Red Belled Woodpecker at my suet and bird feeder. Love seeing the woodpeckers at my feeder. What other woodpecker have you seen?

That's a great picture! I have also seen the red-headed woodpecker but only a couple of times. I love to watch them. The starlings also like the suet and they and the red bellied woodpecker get into arguments sometimes--the woodpecker always wins! lol

myLot reputation of 99/100. kgwat70 (10233)   ranked 494 out of 1,035 in nature  2 years ago

Oh yes, the Starlings are a big suet eater at my feeder as well and the Grackles. Even the smaller birds like eating suet. I have seen both the male and female downy woodpeckers at my feeder and both the male and female red bellied woodpecker. You are right about the red bellied woodpecker and starlings fighting at times. :-)
