The five Elements, Gross and Subtle(open)  email this discussion to a friend?

the gross physical universe is made up of the five great elements
that is, ether ,air,fire,water,earth.
ether ,which is called space, is the first of the five elements it is all pervasive and very subtle. it does not have any specific attributes except sound. after that comes air.
air can be felt but it can not be seen. it has only 2 attributes, sound and touch. next is fire . fire can be seen . it is denser than air . it has 3 atributes namely sound ,touch and form.
following fire there is water. water is still more dense, and like fire it can be seen by the naked eye it can also be tasted . water has 4 attributes, namely, sound touch , form and taste.
earth the last and densest of all the elements, has 5 attribute namely sound , touch , form. touch and smell.
you can see the last 3 elements, fire ,water and earth , have form . the first two, ether and air have other qualities but no form.

all things found in the physical world, are impermanent and subject of continuous change.
all objects undergo complete modification from one name and form to another, and then to still another, and so on. in physical universe ,everything is in constant motion
let us inquire deeper into the nature of the nature of physical objects made up of these five elements. consider the various atom which exist in a given place and a given time.they will comprise various objects which appear there at that moment.
as the atoms move and change their position, the forms they make up also change.
the atoms in all the object undergo such rapid change in position, that it is hard to say when a particular change has taken place in an object.
there is an ongoing pricess of change all object made up of these changeing atoms will be changing their form continiously with time

the atoms which make up human body, like the atom in any other form, change every moment, causing the body to undergo modification.
all these different changes are very much like waves, such as the waves you find in the ocean . for the waves in the ocean there is no beginning or end.
the drops water in one wave get merge into the next wave.the waves in which those drops have been merged again get merged into other waves, and so on.
this process of form changing and merging goes on continuously.
this is the very nature of the the physical universe

Greetings sairam.

Out of curiosity, regarding the attribute for ether, sound, from your viewpoint (or that of your religion perhaps, and if so, what is your religion?) can we detect/perceive that sound? If so, how?

Thanks.

I believe I've read about devices that measure sound waves in space, and what's incredible is that the sounds we've measured correlate to a standard octave scale. Outer space is "in tune", from a musical standpoint. Truly our God is amazing. David wrote the letters of Psalms to stand for musical notation as well as words. The same notes that appear in Scripture are heard in outer space. Just one more indication that the Creator of the Universe is the author of the Bible.

Hi StartledByReality.

Wow! I knew about electromagnetic emissions (could this be the sound referred to) but did not know they correlated to a standard octave scale. If you can remember where you read that, please let me know.

Now, I also knew the Psalms were to be set to music. Where did you find out that the same notes that appear in Scripture are heard in outer space?

Imo, this is exciting! Thanks!

Pastor, this sound must not be understood as sound from physics which needs a medium. When I was attending Sanskrit Classes at a Classical Trained teacher's several of these ancient ideas came up. Each time I had a tendency to explain how each of the FIVE senses and their functioning are understood in modern science. My Sanskrit Teacher wore a look of consternation and simply said, " Well, this is how Shastras say the Five Senses work. In case of each of the senses it the "subtle" sense that moves to the objects and collects info about the object and brings it to the person.

I almost discussed the "the very basic Experiments of School Science" to show how a throry is built in Science. While my teacher was neither impressed nor unimpressed, all I could understand was that such an understanding was fundamental to the World View presented to them via the traditional shastras.

One such is how sound needs a "medium" to travel and reach its destination. It was much later that I understood that these people were not speaking of the Physical Sound but what would go by the reference THE WORD = the content of The Vedas as "heard" by the RiShis.

The word used for both word and sound in Sanskrit is "shabda". In the shastras(the word shastra in Sanskrit means Science). We know from Science that sound as we hear it (in the audible range) are vibrations in a mechanical medium, be it air, liquid or a solid. What Sairam has translated as space is "Akasha" which translates into parallel usable equivalent in Western Philosophy is Ether. You might be tempted to say, "Ah! That "Ether" stuff is already debunked" in every possible avatar of it like say "luminiferous ether" of the theories light before the Michelson-Morely experiment.

Let's say let's go a step further and take this to mean Electromagnetic Radiation that then helps us do away with "medium" and reading Akasha to mean space doesn't create a problem. Still, electromagnetic radiation would imply the presence of activity in Electric and Magnetic fields! Well, this is the farthest that one could go with Science.

Enter Quantum Theory and the redefined/redesigned/redesignated Quantum Electrodynamics. You could get a little further. But what "Shabda" and space Akasha/Vyoma/Kham that The Vedas speak of cannot as yet be modelled in terms of the concepts known to Science as of now.

That is why "shabda in space" or as stated by the Upanishads cannot related to as yet.

The Hindu religious texts, by this I mean the authoritative texts not the secondary standards, speak more of Universe-View and Creation Thoeries in general, rather than mundane behavioral proprieties. These instructions for good behavior are relegated to secondary tertiary and Level-4 docs in the Hindu Philosophical Systems. The one abiding theme is God or THAT ONE as some of the Scriptures prefer calling the ONE CONSCIOUSNESS that is the subdtratum of all experience.

I think I will stop here. It has become rather too long.

Greetings GADHISUNU.

I can tell you are a teacher at heart!

Am I correct in thinking this sound then is to be perceived by our spirit? And, it seems to me as you described it the sound is not moving--it's just there.

I read Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity about three years ago and one thought I came away with was the man was unsure whether ether or something like it, existed or not. Have you read his theory and if so did you get the same impression?

I do not want to ask too many questions since I know I tend to "write a book" when one asks me questions. Just an observation here ----In case of each of the senses it the "subtle" sense that moves to the objects and collects info about the object and brings it to the person. ---

I think there might be a parallel to that theory in the Holy Bible.

You might also know I readily see a parallel in the Holy Bible to the usage of the term "word" (ref---The word used for both word and sound in Sanskrit is "shabda". ---)

Greetings, PASTOR!

You have got the spirit of my reply. Thank you for that. You have understood right again about what I said about shabda. I am sure one looks deeply in the Holy Books of any religion, you would find wonderful insights into the beginnings of the Universe(s), of the position of Man and the purpose of his existence. These are fundamental questions any religion ought to deal so they do. More than that they also provide answers to other mundane quries that we have too. That is why Holy Bible is also referred to as THE WORD. Thanks for the response.

Yes I had read Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity. Don't you find the most intriguing thing about the theory is the constancy of the speed of light in all inertial frames of reference. For all that it is a postulate and not a conclusion of the theory! How did he hit upon such a profound and non-intiotive idea. What suggested this to him. Another brilliance is the other postulate on the Equivalence of Gravitating bodies and an accelerating frame of reference. At least this one is intuitively evident.

And Pastor I would have gone on and on about what exactly is vyoma(space) and what kind of 'Sound' is being referred to. But then I held back for the same reason; to be precise what you said of yourself, that your questions tend to be books. At by now all would have guessed my explanations are indeed books rather than a discussion forum postings. Very few people wilol have the patient to read through.

And Pastor I am sure you would delight in doing God's work like explaining THe Bible to those who are wanting to know. Or am I reading too much into your screen name?
