Day 46: Saving Money and challenges  email this discussion to a friend?

Today is officially Day 46 into the New Year. And the amount of days that we have been trying to save money.
The main goal of saving money has been not going out to eat and eating at home. Out of 46 days we have gone out to eat 4 times. Which honestly isn't bad seeing as thou we use to go out from 4 to 6 times a week down to only 4 times in a month and half. But still everything needs improvement.
I"m still having issues of spending too much at the grocery store. Therefore we haven't saved.. well... much of anything. It's like if I have coupons for something and a sale I feel like I need to buy them just cause we would be saving money in the long run. But with doing that We have a huge supply of food and we save using our coupons. But every week we are overspending on out budget we figured out for our food expenses.
The only conclusion I came up for this is not to look at the paper for adds and just clip the coupons and be done. well I've tried this so far it's only worked one week. Than the following week I went back to looking. And it doesn't help my friend told me about a website that links all of your old coupons to the weekly sales. This has actually made me spend more.

So what do you think a Bad thing spending more than normal for grocerys but a good thing for saving money? Is there really a way to have a Happy Medium?

Any suggestions would be wonderful I could use the advice.

You are not alone in thinking that it's a great deal so you should buy.
I have done that so many times.
I have stopped looking at ads when I know I have enough groceries. You have to.
Now, you just plan your meals around what you have in the house and only plan to get necessities until you actually need to buy more food.
That goes along with clipping coupons.
Only clip coupons for things you know you will use. Not just cause it is a great deal.
Many times you can get a cheaper brand without the coupon. Sometimes the brand matters, but sometimes the cheaper is just as good or better.
If you aren't going to be buying food, you really don't need to check out coupons because they will probably expire before you can use them.
Believe me, it is a lot easier said than done.
But that is the only way you won't keep overspending.

The funny thing is the items on sale are items we use. Although we may not be completely out of that item in the house we will use it sometime and if it's for a great price kind of hard not to get it.
But I'll take your advice of not looking at the ads unless we are getting low on groceries. I really do want us to save but the way I keep finding bargains it's killing out budget.

I used to do the exact same thing.
I really didn't need much but maybe milk, but I'd like to look at what was on sale.
I'd think that is a great price, I should get it to have it.
But than you think later did you really need to get that.
So when the ads came in I just quit looking at them.
It was like an addiction so it wasn't easy. You just have to tell yourself you don't need anything.
And maybe to find new ways of using the foods you do have check out some recipe sites.
www.allrecipes.com lets you type in the ingredients you want and don't want and gives you a list of recipes that you can make.
You might be amazed at how many simple and quick things you can make with food you have on hand.
All this is a learning process and you will get better at saving more on groceries.

I have heard of that website but never checked it out before. That's great to list the things that you have so that way you can use the items that you do have and maybe only buy a few others.
And yes it's like an addiction because it's like a little high that you get from saving money. Which I know that sounds completely crazy and in a way it is. Because your so proud of yourself that you saved so much.
I'm gonna have to really try not to look at ads till our supply of food has gone down.
But I'll be looking at that site I"m always looking for new recipes and things that are quick and tasty. =D

make a list and stick to it! this is the best way to save. Also make foods from scratch, not prepackaged.

myLot reputation of 84/100. neededhope (552)   ranked 88 out of 2,072 in frugal living  2 years ago

I have a hard time making things from scratch but on some things I do. But I'm one of those people that like quick, easy and fast to make. But if I wasn't so lazy and just make a bunch up and put it in the freezer it wouldn't be so bad. And the fact that all we have it the freezer on our refridge may also count against me.
But I'll try to stick with a list thou. Just not very good at it since I find other sales that would save us money in the long run.

i think you should don`t spend money from the food as you don`t eat i think the good thing of spending money is to earn them and invest . my thinking is that you should learn to earn money than you spend them

Do I understand you right, that you are buying stuff only because of the coupons?
Don't get into that trap. Only use coupons when you really need the thing the coupon is for. And you still need to look at the price. Sometimes there are still cheaper things without coupons than brand products you use a coupon for.

I also use a web site called hillbillymom to get recipes. I look at recipes to see how many ingredients are used. I also have some recipes that I have made up that use less ingredients. I make a shopping list and stick to it. I do not buy anything extra.I plan a weekly menu. I do use coupons. I wish there was a way I could post recipes on here, but I think it is against the rules.

Our Dollar General store has a coupon on it several times a month for $5 off $25 or more. When they have these I use it along with my other coupons to stock up on my paper goods (toilet tissue, trash bags, shampoo, etc.) and then I take a month off from buying them. I am doing that this month so I don't have to buy any of those things during December, when I will need to be buying Christmas gifts. Also try taking one week off from the store and just use the items you have around the house. If you must go to the store only buy bread, milk and the few other staples you must buy weekly. Good luck with the saving! Keep us posted and let us know how it goes.
