Rolex watch -- would u sell an inherited one to get out of financial difficulty?  email this discussion to a friend?

You inherited an expensive Rolex watch from your parents and is one whose manufacture was limited or only for a few pieces. You value very much the heirloom and it has even been years that you are keeping it for safety. You even hesitate wearing it for fear of losing it to robbers and hold-uppers but would want to hold on to it because of the memory and sentimental value attached to it. But then, times go hard for you and you experience great financial difficulty and you needed money direly.

Would you sell that Rolex watch that has become the only memory of your parents and one of very high sentimental value to you?

Well, for me if it will help me financially, I'd rather sell it rather than go hungry. The watch is only a thing, it is really a big help because it is a Rolex. I'm very sure my parents will approve of my decision because they love me so much they will not want me to become hungry, I'm more important than the Rolex and if I die, I can't bring the Rolex with me anyway.

So true and I have to agree with you, It is hard to let go a material object because it does recollect the the memories of that person. You will always have memories and you can keep them alive in heart or when you talk to family members. No one can take those away from you as long as you choose to keep them alive which I am sure will because you are asking for advice on a difficult decision. Ultimately you will make the decision that it right for you so let you heart talk to you. Good Luck and take care.

Hi Emerillus,
Selling it would be the best thing to do under that dire financial need. We know how much Rolex watches cost now, especially the vintage edition. I am sure it can go a long way to solve financial problems. Of course, we have to part away the memories that it carries. It may be something we feel guilty or sorry but selling it is the right thing to do rather than, say, borrowing money or even doing illegal acts to solve financial problems:

Newtalent: You are right. The memories will always be there. Let us live in the thought that they who have left us, don't want to see us suffering, and, in a way, are even glad to have the Rolex watch helped us who are still struggling on earth.

Thanks to both of you!

Hi Recycledgoth,
I personally think it is indeed a difficult task. You very well understand the situation because you had been into one before.

It is hard to part away with something because you know that the owner of the property really valued it a lot and considered it precious to him. But, on the other hand, you have no other way to save you from financial difficulties except to sell it. It buys you out of problem and feed you than having it collect dust where you hid it.

Well if afraid to wear it, then yes. You can get robbed at anytime. I mean some can do a home invasion, a friend can help themselves to it, and steal right from under you and then you will still have nothing and you be not be able to use it. i understand the sentiment part, even that they trusted to you to keep it safe. But , It was given to you to do as you choose to with it without stipulations. Let me ask you this question. If you inherited cash instead of this item, would you not spend the cash because of sentiment value and the memory of this loving person that chose you to be the recipient? Or would you because you needed the money? Same question different context. This was given to you to do as you please or need to do with it. Its hard seeing this way but you are still alive and you still have to fend for yourself and family the best way you can. I hope this helps and good luck. Sorry for your loss or the person in question, it's a difficult time.

myLot reputation of 99/100. moneymakingtoday (1992)   ranked 94 out of 19,281 in questions & answers  3 years ago

Hi Newtalent,
Rather than it becoming useless because you are afraid of using it, might as well sell it to save you from financial difficulties. The memories stay with you forever and just be consoled with the thought that the valuable thing left by your parent has really helped you and your family. It had been used for a good purpose for people that they left and loved.

I think it would be a different thing with cash inheritance. Cash has to be spent --- it is our medium of financial transactions. It gets demonitized if kept for a long time. A Rolex watch is a rare to acquire or own, especially for the medium-income families. It also appreciates over time. You can acquire cash anytime but you can never find the same Rolex watch that you had. That is why the difficulty in deciding whether to sell it or not.

To keep food on the table and a roof over the heads of my family, yes, I would sell it. It is meerly an item and yes, it may have sentiment behind it, but, if you have pictures of family that have worn the watch, etc. This still can help you remember the good times, and later when in thought you can thank them for helping you save your family.

We as humans in general need to remember that we can't take the material items with us when it is our time to leave this earth. These items will stay here for others to use and enjoy.

myLot reputation of 99/100. moneymakingtoday (1992)   ranked 94 out of 19,281 in questions & answers  3 years ago

Hi Chulce,
Selling it would be a wise move to save you from financial difficulties. With a sure big sales over the Rolex watch that has become vintage and precious over time, let us be consoled with the fact that those who have left us ahead would be happy to see us, the living, saved and fed because of the valuable thing they left to us.

The memories for them will linger. Nobody can take that away from you. In a way, you may feel guilty doing it, but it was really needed for people whom they have left behind and loved, to live. You are right, we cannot take these material items with us when it is time for us to leave.

Your memories of your parents far out weigh the watch. The watch can't be with you forever as the memories can. Your parents would want you to sell the watch to help yourself out. I am sure they could have given the watch to another if they wanted to. I would not hold on to it a minute longer.

That is a wonderful answer giftsandbagscom. Yes the memories of our parents far out weigh the mechanical things which they left us.

You know something, I have a Rolex watch, which was worn by my grandfather. My father never used the watch, and always kept it in a locker. The fact was, we had forgotten about the watch, and only recently we found it in a box. Of course the watch was not working as it was kept in a box for so many years. We are afraid to give if for repair with the local watch repairers and I am just waiting for a chance to sell it, if some collector advertises. The watch is after all a machine, and if I get a good amount for that, I will not hesitate to sell it. One must not have sentiments over mechanical things, the reason being, if we keep it unused for a long time, it is going to go waste.

myLot reputation of 99/100. moneymakingtoday (1992)   ranked 94 out of 19,281 in questions & answers  3 years ago

Hi Rameshkumaar57,
You are so right, Ramesh. You may have to sell it when the chance comes. There are collectors who advertise to buy these kinds of watches. It is not good to have it repaired by local watch repairers. They had to be repaired by authorized Rolex centers which are not common in a place. And, if you had to repair it with them, it is so costly. Once repaired, they issue a certification as to what repairs were done on the watch. Such precious piece of item going to waste sometimes because we just hide it for fear of being stolen or taken forcibly from us.

The watch is not our parents. Even without the watch, we will still remember our parents. Parents who pass down valuables to their children will wish that the valuables will come in handy when the need arises.

myLot reputation of 99/100. moneymakingtoday (1992)   ranked 94 out of 19,281 in questions & answers  3 years ago

Hi Myzire,
In effect, you are saying that material things do not replace any human being. I agree with you. Even if we part away these things, the memories attached to them do not go with them. They will always remain in us. We will always remember them.

Let us be consoled with the thought that they are happy wherever they are seeing us making use of the valuables they had left us.

stuff is just that, it is stuff and if you need money to eat, why not. the only reason that i would be sad about selling it would be the sentimental value that was attached to it like you mentioned. but which is more important? a watch or food or shelter?

myLot reputation of 99/100. moneymakingtoday (1992)   ranked 94 out of 19,281 in questions & answers  3 years ago

Hi Cher913,
These are just material things, yes. But the sentimental value attached to them is beyond value. It may be sad having to part away the Rolex watch but what is more important in the circumstances is for you to feed your stomach and have financial freedom. I am sure with the huge sales of the watch, it will come a long way for the family. They who have left us, will be happy seeing us being able to make use of their valuable things.

i think i will sell it if i am really in a very desperate situation for money... i believe that my parents will understand my situation and would want me to do that as well rather than seeing me go hungry and die... also, i can't bring the watch with me when i die... of course i will be very upset when i sell it... but i believe that time will heal the wound... take care and have a nice day...

myLot reputation of 99/100. moneymakingtoday (1992)   ranked 94 out of 19,281 in questions & answers  3 years ago

Hi Lingli_78,
Rather than do illegal things to feed ourselves and where you have the Rolex watch to solve financial problem, might as well sell it. It will surely go a long way because of the high value attached to it. We may feel guilty and sad over having to part away with the watch, but we are sure they will understand it. You are selling the watch for a good purpose. The guilt and sad feeling will vanish in time.

You never know what you are capable off when the time comes. I times were really tough and I didn't have a choice I would sell the watch.
I'm sure my parents would forgive mesorry

Hi Missybear,
If in a really difficult situation and there is no other way to do, I would sell it, too. It would be hard but I should decide to do it to save myself and my family. Rather than keep it locked and garnering dust, might as well make it useful for us. I am sure my parents will understand. These may be valuable to them but I know they will be happy seeing us out of financial difficulty by the use of the valuable watch they left us.
