Invasion of the hideously ugly cars

Recently, a car slid into the back of my beautiful Land rover Defender necessitating it being repaired in a garage. My insurance company arranged a hire car for me and unable to hire a Defender they provided me with a horrible Ford Ranger. This ugly and lumbering behemoth they claimed is equivalent to my Defender, a laughable claim. It is is gutless and the handling is awful. I have noticed a increase in these kind of vehicles filling our roads, why do people want to drive such awful vehicles? I am thinking it is about status and ego? all the best urban

My goodnessgraciousme! Why on earth can one not hire a Landrover in England? Has the situation been remedied of late? Hope they did a good job on repairing the Landrover - or did they use second hand panels? I hope you took the insurance company to task over this outrageous lack of knowledge on the matter. How can a Ranger compare to a Rover? Is the reason why we see more foreign vehicles on our roads due to the dropping of tariffs so local industries are forced to compete with those of other countries? Ours have all been propped up with another round of government subsidies just now. People seem to be more interested in the price tag & economy these days than seeing any real value for money in locally produced vehicles. We must re-double our efforts to educate them!

I'm with National Farmer's Union insurance, they are a mutual company, so prophets are shared with customers. Not only are they cheaper but there service was excellent. Sent me to a local Aston Martin garage for repair who where happy to weld in not a replacement rear cross member but paid me for a heavy duty cross member, designed to hold a winch, and weld that in instead all the best urban

Prophets - too many religion based discussions for us, methinks! It's good to have some balance every now & again. I should try to find out what's available here as far as mutual companies. I think most of those left us in the 1990's, but there must be something still. It seems the more ethical way of doing these things.

Okay, no dissen' on Americans!!! What is up with that? Yeah, we don't hear enough of that. I didn't know you guys even sold American cars over there. Don't you drive on the wrong side of the road??? Just asking. Maybe our big lumbering Rangers just can't handle your weather, or something like that. It's a little hard getting around the Mini Coops here. We don't actually call them cars. A Sunday drive to church for me is 100 miles and a Ford Ranger does well for the journey. Ah, that's just me . . . American.

Well, I would have thought you would have been more comfortable in a Jag or Merc for 100mph or if the goings rough a proper 4x4. But each to their own all the best

Mmmm, you're right, it is definitely "to each his own" kind of thing. I didn't say 100mph, I said 100 miles away. But . . . honestly, I actually think Jags and Mercedes are kind of ugly. And they don't fit all the kids we moms have to drive to soccer/baseball/basketball practice and games.

Pfft. You say American cars are ugly? You say we're about status and ego? Excuse me, but is the Ferrari an American vehicle? Last time I checked, it wasn't. Is the Porsche an American car? Nope. You folks in Europe and other places who accuse us Americans of wanting nothing but status and having huge egos...take a look at your cars before you point fingers at us. Who's got the real taste for status in order to feed their egos?

No, no, no, no,no! Please read more carefully. I said these vehicles are filling OUR roads, thus I was questioning why people here wanted to drive such cars and since they are awful and ugly was the only reason status? Clearly then I refer to British people not Americans. Ferraris may be driven for reasons of status and ego but they are good at what they do and are beautiful. all the best urban

I sort of like this kind of a car... more like a Hilux/toyota. www.themotorreport.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2007/09/toyota-hilux.jpg
