Need help with file extension error on my computer  

you may want to run a full system scan first if you have virus software just to be sure that some other program didn't cause the error, but i would have to think if you go onto one of the search engines you should be able to find somewhere that there is one that is maybe a trial of something like that, since they have free anti-virus software there has to someone who has made one for file errors i just hope that it is any easy problem to fix.

You can download vlc-0.8.6c-win32 ( VLC media player) from filehippo.com. Download the latest version. I think this will solve your issue.

What is the extion error message exactly? It could be you just have the wrong media player. Try vlc media player it rarely has errors. If not try looking at the properities of the program and seeing if perhaps maybe you can do something with it. quite often if you have one media player hell even movie maker you can use the 'open with' option to find something that can read the program properally.

hi jennybianca when I ran across that in microsoft word I just asked to change the extension to the one I would use in word, and had no problem as the files were ended with text rather than doc and I wanted all my files in word to be doc files. there would be a caution box come u p and say something like are you sure you want to do that but I just checked yes as the doc extension is the one usually used in Word anyway. so that might work with yours, sorry I cannot be more detailed but i just remember I clicked on the wrong extension and got a box that let me changer the ext. letters from text to doc.

Maybe you have a codec problem, some videos could not be played if you don't have the the right codec, I use GOM player for play all my video files and sometimes it indicates if there's no right codec for a video and even it give me the link to download it from internet.

you could try to use GOM player it's freeware.

First know what the file extension of the movie that you are going to play, then look for a player. If you already have it but it is not the one assigned to play the movie, then the effect will be it will not be played. You just need to assign a valid player for the file. Example your movie is downloaded from youtube, so probably the file extension of it is .flv. Flv file can be played by either RealPlayer or KMPlayer. You should install it to your pc. If you have already installed the player but not assigned to play the movie, it still cannot play the movie, so to assign the RealPlayer as the default player for .flv file, all you have to do is right click on the flv file, choose open with, then choose program, select or browse for RealPlayer, then check the checkbox button saying 'Always choose the selected program to open this kind of file', then click OK. I am sorry to hear this problem that you've encountered recently with your computer's media player.

Let me suggest this software called VLC player - it is a highly rated media player that will play almost any media file thrown at it. It will also play all coded DVDs as well.

I notice that you say that this only started a few weeks ago, so I suspect that the issue is quite a simple one. If you have video clips that you have played before then the problem is probably the file association pointing to the wrong program.
Windows remembers which programs you use to open a givenfile format, but if it points at an incompatable program then it will not open. This can happen if you install a new player which becomes default and then remove it.
Right click on 1 of the files and select "Properties". Under the "General" tab you will see "Opens with:" and then a program name. If this is not the player that you normally use then you can click on the "Change" button to the right of it and select the right one. Now click on "Apply" then "OK". Hopefully this could solve the problem, although the issue may be different than I suspect.

I think your decoders are getting corrupted. Try to install new codecs. Go for k-lite mega codec pack. It is free and very effective. Just install it and restart your pc then your video/audio files will work fine.

if you give the detail of the problem it will be helpful for the person who answers to understand the exact problem.

there could be a virus that has caused this or it is possible that you have uninstalled a software that the file uses to open.
