Hi all,

My name is CJscott. I wanted to talk to you today about a book I am reading called How to Win Friends and Influence People. It was written in the 1930's by a fellow the name of Dale Carnegie. I have read the first two chapters so far, and I have decided that I am going to share my insights and some quotes from the book. I truly hope that we can get a good discussion going on it. My plan is to read each chapter quick, get a good look at what I intend to learn, then re read it with my note pad handy, then share what I learned here, then move on to the next chapter.

I have already read the first chapter so I am going to start their, and being a lover of all things sweet, the chapter heading really made me smile. "If you want to gather honey, don't kick over the beehive"

From their it goes on to tell some stories of how, being nicer to people gets you better results then being mean to people.

One of my favorite lines was "People rewarded for good behavior learn faster, and retain more then efficiently, then those punished for bad behavior"

It says, that by being polite, and offering sincere appreciation the people in your life, be it work, school, or the home, will listen to you, and comply with your wishes in a more gracious mood. But, do not mistake this with flattery which is dishonest.

Think of the other person, before you lash out at them, look at things from their point of view, try your best to be empathetic. What would you, yourself do if you were in their position. Even if you would never be in their position, how do you think you would handle the situation.

Benjamin Franklin once said his secret to dealing with people was that "I will speak ill of no man, and speak all the good I know of everybody"

It seems that former US President, best known as Honest Abe, learned the hard way, to be polite to others. Got challenged to a duel over article he submitted to a paper criticizing a lawyer...I also learned that he died April 15, 1865, across the street from Ford Theater, I am sure this is not news to our American Mylotters, but it was news to me.

And it ends quite on topic, of not judging another person, with a quote by Dr.Johnson "God himself sir, does not propose to judge a man until the end of his days" Why should you and I. And a simple, thought not easy principle to adopt, should you wish to gain more influence over people

Don't criticize, condemn, or complain

A great poem that was shared was Father Forgets by W. Livingston Larned. I would recommend checking out the poem. It was quite touching.

What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks for your time I appreciate you.
CJscott.

I believe that there is a copy of that book around here somewhere. It is very true, and the book is a classic because its principles have withstood the test of time. We all need to think how we like to be treated and do the same to others. This is a book that has been recommended for success for many years, and nothing really changes. People still appreciate being treated fairly and respectfully.

And yet, the only grade I can remember that being taught in school was Kindergarten....

I made a decision to change that, last week...I even formed a half a plan, and I went and talked to some people about what it takes to be on the school board, I have been putting of my research on actually learning what a school board trustee can or can't do in the regards, but I figure its as good a place as any to start, seems I have to get elected though, and I am fairly new to this town.

Cheers.

Sometimes they are eager for new thoughts and new blood on boards.

Thanks for the encouragement dear. I will have to start on getting out in the community and talking to people right away here.

Shouldn't be too hard to get in the running for the up coming election, but, it seems it would be more of a getting out there and getting known deal, there seems to be a lot of interest in getting this position.

With Appreciation.

Well my dear friend, I hope you do find it. I got my copy in a used book store. Personal Development, the proprietor, may not call it that, but they should know what you mean. It is by Dale Carnegie, absolutely great read.

If you can't find it, in a while, and don't want to purchase it on Amazon.com, then I would be happy to gift you my copy, although it is starting to fall apart.

As well, I will be posting about it, with some regularity over the next couple of weeks. So, you can learn quite a bit there, though it will be highly biased by the way I think.

A pleasure to hear from you, with appreciation.

You are so on, to one of the world's greatest secrets. You may be a little girl, but you are an amazing girl, with a big heart.

I'll be getting to writing more about How To Win Friends and Influence People, very shortly, and I am going to give you a sneak peak at one of the neatest, odd things I learned. When you replace "but" with "and" in most of your general sentences, people are more apt to listen to you. It seems that physiologically, people are turned off by the word but, because everything after the but, is usually in disagreement with them. It is a keyword for argument, what you said is true, BUT, I don't believe it. Just doesn't sound as good to most people as What you said is true, AND, I don't believe it.

It is my belief you will love the in-depth post on that.

With Appreciation.
