Woo~Hoo~~~!
I have owned many phones with GPS capabilities before. And I have never really gotten around to making good use of them capabilities before. Last month, I managed to get my hands on a navigational application to install on my phone! And boy was I blown away by it!
Call me a mountain turtle. This is the first time I have used a navigation tool! And it is so much easier to use than I imagined!
The maps are so detailed! The instructions for going to places is good!
Coupled with a new driving license (I just got my license at the beginning of the year!
), I just can't wait to use the app when I am driving!
Locally, the application works wonders!
Now, I am itching to go overseas to drive to see how it will allow me to navigate thru the streets to get to the various places of interest!

ha ha ha ha ha... I don't often get lost. But when it comes to driving, getting the directions to the places I want to go, is very different to taking/commuting via public transport.
This is especially so if I am not driving on local roads, but in overseas travel!

ahgong,
I wonder if you have actually used the iPhone to navigate while driving, let me tell you - DON'T.
Seriously, they (by that I mean other cellphones or smartphones as well) are really not fit or should ever be used at all. For one, they are just too small and when you drive, trying to look at these devices while you are driving is quite a daunting task. You have one the distracting reflection and imagine what it poses for the average imperfect eyesight drivers.
Can you imagine navigating in the heart of Manhattan and you have an incoming call? Talking about using cellphones (all kinds) when driving, this is one where I am sure will defend and advocate against. I am sure the inbuilt or the actual satellite navigation system is the better advocate here where for one, is more interactive and actually does the function more appropriately, if I might say.
I sure wouldn't mind if I use it while walking or if I can stretch the safety line a little further - cycling. But, definitely NOT when we are driving.
Take care and have a nice day.

I wouldn't recommend anyone use the default Maps application to navigate while driving either.
First of all, the Maps maps does not rotate as you move. So, while driving, you have to figure out the left turns from the right which is very daunting if you have to concentrate on the road while driving.
Second, the Maps does not have any voice to inform you of up coming turns or intersections you should be taking. Not very good if you are trying to navigate in a place which you are unfamiliar with.
Third, the landmarks are not clear or indicative enough to allow one to just glance at the screen and make the decision to turn or not at junctions.
If one MUST use the iPhone to navigate, get some external app like the Tom Tom which offers a better GUI for navigating while driving.
I didn't use the iPhone to navigate while I was driving.

Someone like me who's got a phobia on getting lost should own that kind of phone. The reason I hate traveling is because I have very poor sense of geography, directions and locations. I think that is the same reason why I don't drive.

Yes, I think a GPS navigator is really a cool gadget. They are so accurate and detailed. I have a very sense of direction, and I wouldn't want to drive without having one installed in my car. I am sure you will have a wonderful time using it to help you navigate on the roads.
