Publishing a book: Is it really that hard? Help me out!  email this discussion to a friend?

Navimaster (1) 2 years ago

I've searched throughout the internet about publishing my novel, but now I'm doubting whether I should try at all. I've heard you need to pay agents A LOT of money to get your book on the top of the stack with some publishers. And that isn't even a guarantee that it will get your book published. So after the years you've put into your precious work, you come to find out that some companies won't even read it. Even if they do read it, they expect you to hire even more services to "fix" your book. I don't know if I should waste time and effort on something that I might not reap the benefits of. There is also the self-publishing way of doing things, but I've heard it is more of a hassle than anything, since you have to advertise your own novel and most self-publishing companies (websites) tend to be malevolent. It is understandable since it should be the opposite in reality. (You getting paid to publish)

What are your thoughts or opinions on this? For now, I've decided the best way is to probably use some free service to publish my book online as an E-Book instead. And then, if I get enough attention, I'll start charging for some of my stories. Any advice from authors or people who just enjoy writing?

Thanks.

well it is not hard but not easy also , just keep being hardworking , i believe you will have your own book soon but i don't think you could earn much from it .

i agree. Being persistent is also a way to finally get though. The really great writers today started their writing careers by publishing small articles in periodicals and not the book they have brought out as New York Best Seller.
So start small, but dream big, and be persistent.

Publishers cannot afford to pay for the promotion so every single book he accepts to publish, so it natural that the person writing the book would have to pay for the initial costs. If the book is a success, in the long run your investment will pay off.
For authors who are well know, the promotional costs are lower because it familiar names are easily picked off the shelf when compared to unfamiliar names. You need to create a name for yourself.

e-book is a good idea but be careful that the site doesn't run off with your work, for starters make sure you know the what the terms of service that you are going to accept actually tells, otherwise they may try to sell your book elsewhere.

If your book is really good you should try to get it published online by paying sites for starters.

Anyway, i haven't started publishing books yet as i don't find the time , but i hope i have been helpful. Good luck. Happy mylotting.

Hey, thanks for your response. Yeah, I think I'm going to go with the e-book idea and I'll see if I can publish them later when I finally have the money and time to do so.

But for now, I'm enjoying MyLot. So many things you can do in this site...it is amazing!

And you get paid too?

Wow!

Thanks anyway :)

I have to disagree strongly with Cambiste. Publishers can - and do - afford to pay for promotion (and many other things) if they consider something worth publishing. Many thousands of books are published every year with NO cost (and often some profit) to the author.

There are, of course, plenty of publishers who are eager to take your money but they will not promote it nearly as eagerly as they would if it were something they had chosen to publish (in fact, many will not promote it at all - all they are interested in is making a profit out of charging the author to have it printed).

Getting a first novel published may take years and many, many rejection slips but it should NEVER cost the author anything more than time, persistence and angst!

Small publishers will not want to take responsibility of your book's success. Making copies available in your nearest bookstore cannot be done even if they think the book is really good. Which is also why many good books never appear in the bookstores, but medium-quality books often appear everywhere.

Well, i don't really have experience with this, and i too had been told that publishing good books doesn't cost much, and your books are rejected time and again by different publishers; but what you see in reality seems to against this.

If your book is worth publishing, somebody, somewhere will publish it. You DO NOT need to pay anything if it is any good! Of course, agents will charge a fee but beware of anyone who asks you to put money up front.

If a publisher thinks a book needs some editing or rewriting, they will either suggest that you do it yourself (and you may decide to hire an editor but it is not essential) or they will do the editing to their house style or standard.

You can either choose to use an agent or you can send your book to publishers yourself. Most first novels are not dealt with by agents but by the publishers themselves. The advantage of using an agent (if you can even get one to take you on) is that the agent knows best which publishers would be most likely to publish your work and, very likely, which editor to submit to.

In short, NEVER EVER pay to have your work published. If it is worth it, it will pay for itself! That is not to say that no successful author ever paid to have their first book published: some have had rejection after rejection and have then believed so passionately in their work that they have paid to have it published. Most, however, have persisted and (maybe after 20 or more rejections) have found a publisher.

You can publish yourself (Lulu.com is one site which will print books on demand and - for a small outlay - will give your book an ISBN which will allow you to list it on Amazon and sell it to booksellers. Beware, however: Lulu will only charge for copies that they print, so it's a great deal cheaper than many 'vanity publishers' who will insist that you invest in a certain number of copies. Whichever method you choose, however, you will have to do all the 'publishing' yourself: sending review copies to reviewers, selling and distributing to booksellers, dealing with accounts and returns and (if you have pre-paid for a certain number of copies), storing your stock. There are many other things that a publisher will deal with, of course, that you will have to do - designing the book and the jacket (the jacket sells more copies than anything else) and writing the 'blurb'. All of these things are much better dealt with by professionals and will be done for free by a publisher that sees your work as worth his while.

Wow, thanks for all the great info!
I'll take all of it into account.
Also, I was thinking of Lulu, but I read somewhere that it isn't a nice site.
Have you used it before? Some say once your book is in their hands, they do whatever they want with it. Is this true? I'm not really sure if I could trust them. Anyway, thanks again.

I think that Lulu is a very reputable site. Their Terms state that you retain copyright in any material you upload but you "grant Lulu the nonexclusive right to provide a service to post, display, copy, and sell that Content within the limitations you set during the online publishing process." (in other words, you are in control of how it is used). You do agree that Lulu may make 'minor alterations' to your copy for the purposes of publication. This will, I think, be very small changes such as, for example, dealing with 'widows' and 'orphans' (where a single word or line of a paragraph carries over to the next page).

Take time to read the Terms carefully: http://www.lulu.com/about/member_agreement.php

You can either format your book exactly as you want it or you can ask Lulu to format it for printing, in which case they will use a professional book designer to make it look as good as any commercial product. Naturally, there is a charge for that. If you want to format it yourself, the best way to do this is by using the Adobe PDF format. Take note of the standard page sizes that Lulu recommend and make sure that everything is in order (page size, margins, gutter, placing of grahics, &c) before you send it. If you want Lulu to help with the formatting, the best medium to send it in would be MS Word .doc format (or Rich Text Format if you don't use Word or a program that can save as a Word .doc).

Don't forget the cover/jacket and the spine! It has been said "Never judge a book by its cover." but the fact is that most people do ... at least, that single fraction-of-a-second glance is all important in deciding whether a customer will pick a book off the shelf or leave it!

Lulu provide templates for all the sizes of publications they produce and you should download and use them: http://www.lulu.com/uk/publish/books/?cid=nav_bks and DO study plenty of book designs in your local bookstore. Ask yourself what makes YOU want to pick up a book!

Self-publishing should be better actually. I had heard that the following publishing house publishes book for free for aspiring writers and authors.

www.whitmorepublishing.com

You can check them out! Ofcourse, there is hardwork in everything. You need to do some advertising and marketing as you are just a starter. This would also apply if you opt for e-book. Nothing sells without advertising and marketing. So if you are by luck getting the book published free, why not take some hassle for marketing. Nothing comes easy.

Also, as an other option you need not pay a LOT of money for services to fix your book etc. You can always find people on net who will do this for you at very low cost. Do some net search for what you need to be done and probably you will find many more ways it can be done than you imagined.

myLot reputation of 86/100. owlwings (12406)  2 years ago

The only thing I would say about Whitmore Publishing is that their website has NO Terms & Conditions and very little advice on what they accept or do not accept. They only say that they are a 'trade imprint and do not require an investment by the author into publication of the author's work. If your work is found to be acceptable for publication by our company we will respond with a formal offer and a publishing contract.' in other words, they don't guarantee to publish your work (but then no publisher could say that - even Lulu has restrictions on what they can accept!)

I am always suspicious of companies that advertise for submissions: all reputable publishers get far too many manuscripts to ever need to do that!
