do you have ticks in your area? |
| |
| HI guys, I live in south central Oklahoma and now that the weather has gotten so much warmer the ticks are coming out. If some of you don't understand the word ticks, they are brown or off color parasites that attach themselves to an animal and humans too. I walk my dogs every day in some heavily covered grassy areas which might have to change but I have been barraged with a bunch of ticks. I pulled three out of my head two days ago. I have put flea and tick collars on my dogs and cats but I have to find a way to keep them off me. I have sprinkled cedar chips around and inside the house for the possible flea infestation we get here too. Do you all have any remedies on how to keep ticks off us as humans or even our animals? Please give me your thoughts. God bless you all, quita 88 | | | | | |

| | Yes, I am always fighting with ticks in my house. I have 4 indoor dogs and I do have problems keeping them ticks free. I bath them with medicated solution for ticks from the vet at least once a week. It helps but I hope to read some of your responses here for other solution to this problem. | | | | | | |

| | I kinda figured I'd get a lot of posts on this tick situation. With the two dogs and two cats and living around a lake it seems to be much worse than I remember. I am using Skin So Soft from AVon to help with not only ticks but also mosquitos. Yesterday I taped the bottom of my jeans to walk the dogs and that kept the ticks from crawling up my pants leg but I found one on my shoulder all the same. I did find dead ticks in the mats I bought the dogs to sleep on and that tells me the flea collars are working. I am hoping too that the cedar chips help. So for now we'll both watch and see what kind of responses we get. thanks and talk at ya later, quita | | | |

| | Well, I'll be ! What a great source of information you are Gerty !! I never thought of flea collars on my legs over socks---great idea! I do wear a hat but I will have to buy some insect repellent. The salt I think we too used a long time ago but I had forgotten it.That is another great idea but I sure didn't know the salt polishes the insects and they dehydrate. HMMM? And it kills the eggs too. I'll also have to buy lots of salt today too ! Thanks from the bottom of my heart for all your knowledge. You have been a great help! God Bless you, quita | | | |

| | I understand how they spread. I also check the ears and eyes because the ticks like to be close to a water source. The rectum too. As far as little girls being flea infested is a new one on me. There is a product on the market for lice that works for flea eggs. I don't remember the name but ask your pharmacist. A clinic is good but this product works wonders. We used it in the nursing homes I've worked at for lice. Many old folks get lice that accumulate in their cruddy, nasty hair. Thanks for responding. quita PS. read GardenGerty's ideas. They are great! | | | |

| | For lice,(and flea eggs) eventually the chemicals get to where they do not work. I have heard of, and seen people get either cooking oil, or mayonnaise rubbed in. Then they cover it with a plastic shower cap for two hours. Use a special comb with tight teeth to pull the flea eggs or lice eggs out of the hair. Shampoo as usual. Every night, use conditioner, and the nit comb, then shampoo for two weeks. It usually takes care of an infestation of the scalp. Did you know dying your hair will kill parasites like these? | | | |

| | Hi, quita88. If we have ticks around here, I would not know too much about it. I don't have any pets at home. I don't be around them either. Our old family dog had ticks when he was living. I have never had to pull ticks out of my hair, and I hope that I don't have to either. Some flea powder would be effective in combating this problem. Or maybe just seeing a doctor would help too. | | | | | | |

| | Hi and thanks for your response! I'm afraid the dr. would tell me to try some commercial products for the ticks. He would treat me if I got tick fever tho. I did a long time ago get a tick in my ear. The dr.did take that thing out and put in alcohol. Thanks for your response. quita88 | | | |

| | Brush your pets every day. Also are you applying the flea and tick medicine every month to your pets? I know one brand is called Frontline. I wonder if there is some kind of herb that humans can use to fend of ticks. | | | | | | |

| | I brush my pets every few days but not every day and I have not used Frontline but have heard of it. I guess I'm going to have to use some different methods. As to herbs , the use of garlic taken by mouth every day is said to fend off ticks and fleas as our bodie emit the smell and these parasites don't like garlic. I will be goin to town in a bit and see about Frontline. And thanks for the info. quita | | | |

| | Well Gabs ! we humans have blood too!! These guys are really nasty parasites. I have taken two off my Galeena just few minutes ago. I have't had any on me today but did yesterday. These ticks are called brown dog ticks and cause lyme disease and tick fever, basically the same thing. I hope you don't have them but they can't bite you by just holding them. Garden Gerty gave me some great ideas today. Have you read her post?? I bought lots of salt today and sprinkled my floors with it cuz as Gerty said it is an abrasive and wears off either the fleas and tick outsides and they dehydrate. This used to be my mama's house and she always had trouble with fleas so the salt today. I also have been taping my jeans legs so ticks can't crawl up my legs when I walk the dogs. The flea collars for dogs and cats are working cuz on the doggie mats I bought for them there are dead ticks. The ticks stay close to water, the eyes, nose and mouth of a dog or cat and when they cross the barrier of the flea and tick collar they are poisoned. I also put out cedar chips around this house , inside and outside. I might end up having to have the whole house and yard sprayed but it would be worth it if none of us get sick. Now, Gabs did I just give you a quickie education??? LOL later sweetie, quita | | | |

| | Lol Quita you certainly have but thank you for that I did read Gerty's Post yes and I have to say I was amazed to about the Salt but I will certainly remember this Gissi gets regular treatment by the vet for Fleas as he allergic to them so it has to be done properly and it takes 3 of us to do it yes you read right, 2 hold him down and the Vet puts the stuff on, even the vet can not understand Gissi's fear of flea treatment, in the past he has bitten me for doing the treatment so he has to be musseled to have it done as he will bite Hugs | | | |

| | We have them too. I didn't know there was more then one kind but here we have the ones that will attach themselves to you until you have to pull them off with half your skin but in some other places they feed on you for a minute and then come off by themselves. I haven't found a way that really keeps them away. I mean I can be covered in insect keep away stuff and still I'm getting turned into the bug buffet. I remember some years ago when I was a kid at camp I sprayed a lot of this DeepWoods stufff on and didn't get not one bite while the other kids were getting torn up. Maybe the bugs are use to it now because it doesn't work the same as then. I suppse the next best thing is scuba gear and gloves. | | | | | | |

| | LOL, I love the scuba gear and gloves :) I'm sure there are more than one kind of tick and they all will attach themselves to any living being that has blood running thru their veins ! I have been dealing with ticks for years but have been in Montana for 7 years and had forgotten the nasty critters cuz we don't have them up there. About the only way to keep them off is to check yourself several times a day. Everywhere--- Deep woods off should work fair but I'm more into natural stuff. I use a lot of Skin So Soft from Avon and helps with mosquitos and bugs in general. I hope you don't have to spend all summer in scuba gear and gloves ! Get some kind of insect repellent and use citronella out side and hope and pray that helps keeping the nasties away !! Thanks for making me laugh ! quit | | | |
