A New Category To Join--Open Mike!

Recently I was asked to consider putting any political posts in the "Politics" Catagory. I declined for several reasons, chief among them being that politics is not a narrow category, but one which interacts with numerous others, such as financial, religious, philosophical, fashion, food, medical..in short, it affects our lives in countless ways, & thus can't be squashed into one little box, then left to a precious few. Many people are leaving "Politics" for many reasons, but information they need won't get out if they can only find it there.

A lot of subjects besides politics are those which may fork off to other topics, or easily blend in with (at first) seemingly non-related ones. Music & arts, for example, or dining & wines, or famous eateries. Travel covers a host of topics (including politics). I'm sure you can think of dozens, at least.

One can always go to a specific category if it seems helpful, but in "Open Mike," a term taken largely from radio--where it works extremely well--one doesn't need to feel confined to one kind of topic! It will be an excellent way to reach out to others who might not think to look for, say, collectible dishware under a category such as fine dining, or whatever. Car refurbishers enthusiasts might try to locate others in a "NASCAR" topic, since it's about cars, but might not find enough others there to satisfy his needs.

Under the current way of choosing a category, he'd probably have to create yet another splinter category (& we don't have enough of those, right...? rolleyes ), & most folks wouldn't see it until long after he's finished the job.

Under Open Mike, he could post a discussion like, "I Need Help Refurbishing My Bugatti!" And--once a large enough base of contributors exists--very quickly surely someone would reply.

So, if you have a topic that just won't fit into a given box, please try out this category, & tell others about it, because to work, it needs as many people coming to it as possible.

I thought that's what we had questions and answers category for.

I think they should streamline some of these categories like food would be just fine for eating, cooking, food, etc. I asked when Alice was up if some of the identical categories could be combined. I'll have watching my weight in my favorites and going on a diet, weight watching, etc. will keep asking me to add the topic. I have several animal topics and I still get asked to join yet another animal one that is often the same or similar to the one I already have!

By the way, you're right. Politics affects everything. We recently received notice that Bill Owens has a bill to help small businesses in areas with lesds than 50,000 people so they can hire people. That sounds good, but after the incentives are taken away, then what?

Well, I have posted in the Q&A category, but sometimes I don't have a question, per se, just information to share. I still think Open Mike would make it possible to combine categories when they overlap, with no-one getting shirty about it, since anything goes in such a venue, by definition. Well, the other usual rules apply (such as no swearing or other abuses), but you wouldn't get in "trouble" for being "off-topic" since there is no single topic. Naturally, the single topic categories are still there, if someone finds them sufficient for their purposes.

And yes, I think a great deal of "streamlining" should be done. There are actually many redundant topics, & I think it causes too much division of audiences. Just look at all the various cat categories for instance. Why can't they be combined? Instead, one must choose one, & thus not have access to the others, as it's against the rules to post the same info to more than one category! How would I know which cat category happens to have the one person in it who could answer my query for info on a physical condition, for example? If I'm LUCKY, I'll pick the right one, but if not, I'm just out of luck, because I can't post the same post to any other similar categories! I think that's unfair. Streamlining, combining those various CATegories would prevent this problem.

Yes, politics is ubiquitous. There are other topics like that. Take "Life." "Life" covers EVERYTHING! I'm not even sure what is even considered "proper" in that category. I mean, even death can come under that topic, as I see it!

I don't know anything about this Bill Owens person--could you give me clear details on it?

Well, just start using it (& spread the word), & it will! :o) Here's the beauty part--no-one owns this category. It's only monitored for the usual abuses, & you can blend topics PLUS (eventually) have possibly the widest selection of people into which you can tap for resources or share info--on MyLot?

Not a bad deal, I think! I can't imagine why it never existed before!

By the way, feel free to copy my "ad" for the OM category & put it on all your posts so others will find out about it!
