How? By using our Federal tax money. Why? There is a whole (hole?-have trouble with those two)on my hubby's side of the bed that is big enough for him to put a pillow on the springs, a towel over that and then the sheet. That's what he's been sleeping on.
If we had recycled mattresses, we would get that. But we don't have a recycler or a distributer for either here.
So what's frugal? A $250 mattress is guaranteed for 5 years and a $350 is guaranteed for 10. So we're getting a 10 year guaranteed one. That will save us $150 down the line.
Yes, I know, I looked at mattresses at yard sales and so on. But they were all in pretty bad shape. If we got a year out of them, I would be surprised. Also, if you watched dirty jobs, when they did mattress recycling, you know you don't want someone else's mattress. 10 lbs of dead skin, dust mites, bedbugs, bodily fluids, etc. The 2nd hand mattresses I looked at had stains and all I could think of were various bodily fluids.
So what are you doing for a mattress? When is yours due to be past its guarantee? What will you do for a new one? Are you getting government money back? What are your plans for it? I can remember when we used to take a trip with our gov. $. Now it's what do we REALLY need and what bills can we pay. Has what you buy with yours changed? At least we got money back and didn't have to pay in.

The mattress we are sleeping on we bought from a friend, when she had to move out of her home, because her hubby was in a nursing home. Actually, I was the Social Services Designee, and I felt it would help her to have the money and to not have to move it. It is not a high quality mattress, and should be replaced probably within the next few years, but it is okay.It is a queen sized mattress. My son sleeps on our good full size mattress, which we got at Sam's Club less than ten years ago, and it did not get slept on a lot the last five years. The other full size I bought new when my first hubby was ill. The furniture store told us it was more or less "guest room" quality, not designed for two people to sleep on year around. It is also pretty nice, though. The twin sized I picked up at a reuse center, and it looks really brand new, except for a spot where it looked like a kid colored the side of it with a blue marker. Our tax money is frittering away in my opinion, but we have invested a tiny bit of it, and got a zoo pass with part of it, and will take a trip and have fixed a car, and so on and so forth. It hedges us a bit, since I am not working very much at all at this time. Last year was about the same, in a way.

Wow! What an incredible response.
Sounds like you have enough mattresses for a while.
Sounds like the tax money is doing a great job of hedging things for you.
Thank you very much for not letting this discussion die in zero-land. I already have a couple there.

I really hope you get your new mattress soon. It is so important to have a good place to sleep. I have the two extra beds in my "guest room" for those rare occasions when my daughter and her family are here.

Monday, my husband will go get it Monday.
He wanted soft, I wanted firm, we're getting medium. I guess we'll both have to adjust!

When we put our old house up for sale we left our box spring and bed frame there for staging and we just slept on the mattress on the floor in the new place. Our house was only on the market for a month but by the time we sold it we had decided that our first purchase would be a brand new bed - our backs were killing us! Since we had the money we splurged and bought a fancy pillow top set and it was the best investment we have ever made. It's a little more firm than I thought I'd like but I have never slept so well in my entire life - it was absolutely worth the $1000. I think it has a 25 or 30 year guarantee so we're good for many more restful nights!

That's a terrific guarantee!
We have our new mattress. It's medium. I like firm and her likes soft, so it's a little hard for him and it's a little soft for me, but it's OK.

I have a mattress that is probably way past due..lol..It is still on really good shape though so I'm going to wait a while before I get another one. I am getting money back this year but I am planning to save it...or go on a vacation with my family. I'm leaning toward the vacation at the moment.
