Need recommendations for an external hard drive...  email this discussion to a friend?

I am looking to buy an external hard drive. I want close to 700GB size. It is for putting movies on and pictures so we can view them on the tv screen instread of huddled around the small PC screen.

So.. if you have one... share your brand and why you like it and why you think it is the best.

Anyone have a Western Digital? What do you think about it?

Also, is there something else I need to be cautious of having for it to accomodate my PC? I have Windows XP. I won't be using it much with the PC, just watching on the TV via USB connection but just in case I want to put something from my PC to the External HD...is there anything I need to know?

Thanks for all comments

Hi coffeebreak,

I am using the Western Digital external hard drive. But mine is only 250 gigabytes. I do not know if they have this 700 gigabytes because I never saw it before. All i knew is they have one terabytes or 500 gigabytes.

When I first using my external hard drive, there is no problem with it. But after a while my lap top has a little bit problem to detected it. But it is all my problem since I dropped it a few times alreadythumbdown. Other then that, everything is just fine. And I am using it for more then a year now.

THanks for you comment. I might use it for my PC back up, but mostly at the moment anyway, it is to copy lots of movies on to and view from the TV.

My first thought on that is a bargain laptop with 100 GB or more would probably be a better solution, and then you would have a backup computer in case yours failed. If you can pick up a nice laptop with 200 GB for $200 shipped, why pay $100 for an external drive with less memory?

I"m copying what my son did. But in his case, he just did it and no reserach for what's best and money conscious and such! I want one that lasts and has lots of room. And just basically learning about external HDs. I will probably back up my PC on it too. I want at least 500GB

$200 for a laptop? Where?

eBay has lots of laptops with 200 GB or more with DVDRW and WiFi between $200 and $300 (USD) shipped, some new, some factory reconditioned and Buyer Protection which pays for your return shipping if the product is not shipped or not as described.

I have one I'm no longer using.. I gave it to my son in law... I got it at Walmart.. I don't know how big it was.. but it was a lot of gigs. I think I paid about $60 for it.

My initial research shows they aren't very expensive. $129 for 500GB give or take and I believe that was at Walmart. I am leary of buying somethig like this at Walmart as they don't have a good rep for customer service. And I need that as I am one of those people where "if something bad can happen, it probably will" resides within my life! But Best Buy is good and they have about the same thing.
I just want to copy alot of movies to it and back up for my PC.

WD dose have a series of portable HDs close to 700 GB, about $180 for 640 GB and $220 for 750 GB in my country. The price is only for reference.

What have you heard about WD? About $120 for 500GB here in the states..give or take. I am using my free money earned (from surveys and such) to buy this and currently have $100 so I don't have to "come up" with much more.

I hadn't heard of Western Digital in this area before..if at all. Just the other name brands, but my daughter and son bought WD so that is why I have been looking at that one, but Sony seems to have good"sounding" ones too.

Thanks for you comment

I have been using WD HDs for almost 5 years and they have worked fine. You can also try Hitachi as an alternate. Seagate, another brand, 11th 500GB version is not recommanded for they break down always, wiping everything in them so have a bad reputation.
I don't know whether it is legal or available in the US that one can go to a compmarket and buy a simple device to transform an ordinary HD into a mobile HD. Such a modification dose exist. A non-mobile 640GB WD HD costs about $60 and the modification device about $15 so you can have a shot.

You can select HDD's from a large range having 250,500,640 GB's of space.I generally recommend you to buy a Western Digital or Seagate Hard drive. Both of these companies are the best HDD manufacturers.

Thanks for the info. I knew about WD but was seeing alot of the Seagate and I have never heard of that one before...so that is good to know they are both the same quality. Now, I just need to compare price and size and choose between them. Thanks!
