Obamas Opinion on Az immigration law |
| |
| PHOENIX - President Barack Obama on Thursday criticized a pending Arizona law that would make it a state crime to be in the United States illegally and require anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant to produce identification. Such legislation could "threaten to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans," the president said during a naturalization ceremony for members of the United States Armed Services. Gov. Jan Brewer is nearing a deadline to act o n the measure. Civil rights activists have said the bill would lead to racial profiling and deter Hispanics from reporting crimes. Hundreds of Hispanics protested the legislation at the State Capitol complex on Thursday. A Saturday deadline for Brewer, a Republican, to act on the bill was set on Monday when the legislation arrived on her desk. She can sign, veto or allow it to become law without her signature. Asked Thursday if she is concerned that the immigration bill could lead to racial profiling in the state, Brewer said that she is still considering the effects of the legislation. "I've been meeting with lawyers, and I’ve been looking at it very diligently," she said. Brewer, who became governor after Janet Napolitano left to lead the Department of Homeland Security, is facing a primary challenge from a handful of Republicans in August. Republican Sen. John McCain, who also is facing a primary challenge from the right, has said he supports the legislation. Obama said Thursday that he has asked members of his administration to "closely monitor" the situation. He warned that failure to act at a federal level to pass comprehensive immigration reform would only open the floodgates to irresponsible and overreaching measures on the state level, referring directly to "efforts in Arizona." Nation's busiest border crossing Arizona has an estimated 460,000 illegal immigrants and is the nation's busiest border crossing point. Other provisions of the bill allow lawsuits against government agencies that hinder enforcement of immigration laws, and make it illegal to hire illegal immigrants for day labor or knowingly transport them. The bill's sponsor, Republican Sen. Russell Pearce of Mesa, said it would remove "political handcuffs" from police and help drive illegal immigrants from the state. "Illegal is illegal," said Pearce, a driving force on the issue in Arizona. "We'll have less crime. We'll have lower taxes. We'll have safer neighborhoods. We'll have shorter lines in the emergency rooms. We'll have smaller classrooms." The bill would take effect 90 days after the current legislative session ends if it becomes law. The March 27 shooting death of rancher Bob Krentz on his property in southeastern Arizona has brought illegal immigration and border security into greater focus in the state. Authorities believe Krentz was killed by an illegal border crosser. Since the shooting, Brewer and other officeholders and candidates have toured the state's border with Mexico. On Thursday, she ordered a reallocation of state National Guard and law enforcement resources and called on the federal government to deploy National Guard troops. Arizona has previously passed a variety of get-tough measures dealing with illegal immigration. Napolitano, a Democrat, vetoed proposals similar to the bill just approved by the Legislature. But she signed a 2007 law that imposes sanctions against employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants. Other state laws make human smuggling a state crime and restrict illegal immigrants' eligibility for public services. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/36735281 | | | | | |

| | America needs to stop pussyfooting around. The people who are crossing the border illegally are not nice people. They are criminals. They have legal means in which they can emigrate to the US just like our ancestors had to do. My grandfather was born in Canada, but he crossed the border legally. These illegals just send money back to their family who doesn't use birth control and just keeps making more babies to run across the border and kill ranchers and slaughter their animals and leave trash everywhere. This is not the United States of Mexico! | | | | | | |

| | these are good points coffeegurl, and bottom line, when they cross that border, without following the right channels, they are breaking the law. so you are very right. And as you said, there are legal ways to come here to better your life. Our country was created by immigrants. | | | |

| | yes the first poster had an issue, I hope I cleared it up for her sufficiently. I agree with you Rose that State and Federal need to step up. I really believe that if they enforced the current laws and stopped tying up law enforcement, the problem would not be so bad. | | | |

| | My American husband and I (A Canadian Citizen) used to live in Arizona. We both agree that what they want to do therre is a little extreme. As a Canadian citizen, I never stayed there more than six months at a time, so I don't think I'd qualify for being illegal, however, is six months too long now, under the new law? I never had papers of any sort, but I did "live there with my American husband." Now my American husband and I live up in Canada. Good for Obama!!! | | | | | | |

| | I love the fact that he is against this bill...yet he is for the REAL ID and for the new Biometric ID's that Lindsey Graham is pushing. Which is just as invasive to the American public and "unfair". I guess he only cares about the "illegals" rights and could care less about the citizens of this country's rights. | | | | | | |

| | My comment is an echo of Lil's above me. And I might add that, in my personal opinion, that whole ID card is a hell of a lot more intrusive on freedom than profiling suspicious people. We're talking a law enforcement strategy vs. a catalog of every individual person in the country. What is this? The friggin' new-age Dewey Decimal System for humans? It's all feel-good lib stuff in terms of the "racial profiling" bit. I actually agree that the Arizona law might be/probably is unconstitutional. But when someone claims to not want Arizona's measures and instead want to round up every American's fingerprints and DNA and catalog them, it seems pretty clear that they're not worried about individual freedoms being violated. They're worried that building a profile of an illegal is actually being racist somehow. And we musn't do that! If it were up to lib progressives, minorities would never, ever get into trouble no matter the crime (unless they voted Republican, of course). They would go to the ends of the Earth to make excuses and blame a white, oppressive, religious, conservative society. | | | | | | |

| | I watched the brave governor sign the bill, had the federal government done their job this bill would not be necessary. The sheriff spoke just before the bill was signed he said Arizona law enforcement do not profile going on to say that is not how they roll. This bill gives law enforcement the tools that they need to protect all the citizens of Arizona. Some people seem much more concerned that illegals has civil rights then the citizens of the United States. The rancher that was murdered in cold blood on his property last month where was his civil rights. The rancher and his family had for a very long time pleaded with the federal government for help their pleads fell on deft ear it cost the rancher his life at the hands of an illegal trespassing on his private property. The Rasmussen report took a poll in Arizona last month 70% of the people polled wanted this bill signed in to law. People from out of state was bused in today to protest this bill being signed the good people of Arizona won the good fight today. This bill give law enforcement the tools they need to protect all the citizen in the state of Arizona. Law enforcement will be working with ice when they do have a illegal issue in the state of Arizona and that is a good thing. Far as Obama appears he always stands on the side of anti-American,wasn't he the guy that did not give a crap about 68% of the American rights when he signed the democrats unconstitutional health care bill, where the hell was my rights as a American citizen? | | | |

| | There are those who want the USA to go away. What better way than to encourage us to merge with Mexico and Canada. Sort of like the European Union, only The American Union. New laws, throw out the Constitution, it's coming folks. And this is only the beginning. The people are beginning to speak up. My fear it is to late. People like this brave Governor and others who are refusing to be held for ransom by the federal government's liberal socialists...well, perhaps the History books will honor them. But only if we win. | | | |

| | Alot of us are wondering the same thing. We used to be the land of opportunity. Now that is a joke. Those who immigrated here legally prospered. Now we say tax those who obey the law so those who don't obey the law can live a higher life style and prosper. Does that make sense? Qouls you tell your kids, if you break the rules you'll get to go to the movies. Obey them and your grounded! ????? | | | |

| | So what part of ILLEGAL does he not understand? Why have a LAW and encourage people to ignore it? Doesn't that devalue those who DO OBEY IT? I know two sisters from Mexico who came here LEGAL. They are now citizens and work and pay taxes. They are proud that they do NOT receive government handouts. They've worked hard, gotten an education and hold down a job and raise their kids to speak the English language as well as their mother tongue. What really brings home the point is that if you ask them how they feel about the illegals in the country...well let's just say when I asked them, they said some words in Spanish that I hadn't heard before. lol They came here poor, and now they own a home. And they did it with very little help from the government. And they expect that others could too. If they tried. | | | | | | |

| | Hofferp, yes she signed it and Obama thinks it is a call to action to counter it. Debra, I agree that states are standing up. Unfortunately, I think any immigration issues, the Feds will prevail. It is a matter of national security and I agree that the administration was sleeping on the job on this one. | | | |

You know, I've been hearing about how those who are asking for his legal birth certificate were looneys and conspiracy nuts....guess a whole state must be nuts huh????? lol I'm tired of hearing that conservatives are either racists, nazis or nuts. I'm sure glad now that a whole state is subject to the insults being hurled at those of us who think for themselves. | | | |

| | What makes me wonder is if Hillary thought that she could prove he was not born in America she would have spent millions to prove it. Why did she stop looking? I wonder what she was promised or what she was threatened with. What scares me is by the time the next election is here America will be in the mist of a civil war. If he shoves a bill making illegals legal down our throats like he did with the health bill Americans are not going to appreciate being taken over by people that not only don't speak the language but hate us. I hope America wakes up before the demoncrats(spelling on purpose) destroy us. | | | |
