"Shame on me if you fool me twice"

Thieves have found their way into our lives twice this time.
First, it was in our new and unfinished house last December 2009. Because of lack of funds, our kitchen remained undone. All there is are the foundations and the roof but still without walls. So you could just imagine how easy it would be for the thief to come and go with our items. Yes, we don't even have a screen to our kitchen.
Second, just the other day, our boarders from our old house converted into a boarding house, came home shocked to find that their padlocks were pried open. Out of three, 2 rooms were successfully opened while the third one failed in its attempt.
Valuable items were lost but that doesn't surprise us. Front of our house is an unfinished barber shop with its accordion-type door always without a lock.
Our gate is sometimes left open because the boarders don't seem to be responsible enough to make sure it is locked. And our front door was a padlock that can be opened with the right combination of digits so I guess the thief somehow managed to know the combination.
Twice it happened to us but I realized that it is our shortcoming that led to this. If only we kept our place safe and secure, none of this would have happened.
Are you sometimes so lax, and so presumptive that nothing will happen to your home so that you don't take precautionary measures seriously?

I definitely could say that my mom is the best security department you'll ever going to need at home. We have different locks and gates (which aren't obviously keeping everyone out), we have dogs and she roves around the house and we do spot checks all around.

You could actually use it or create a habit for it. There's a tendency for robbers or burglars to not really put themselves in situations where they would be caught (who would anyway?) so, if the burglar senses that the house or area's security is given importance, then they'd not attempt to break in. Unless of course your house has a 3feet diamond chandelier hanging and glittering - luring them.

Oh no, we don't have those glittering chandeliers, but somehow we lured them into our home because of our lack of vigilance for safety. When things like these happen, you do realize how susceptible you were to other events far worse than what happened. Good thing the robber took things and not lives.

I could use a security department like that!

I'm sorry thieves have broken into your house and taken you valuables.Well it does seem you haven't taken adequate precaution in securing your house. At our place thieves have taken goods left outside.I suppose that shows our laxity. After a couple of such incidents i have taken adequate precaution to lock the doors.I'm only guessing and it may not be true you are in financial difficulty which is preventing you from installing proper locking system in your house.

It's sad because we shouldn't have to take extra measure to protect our things, should we? A regular lock should be sufficient, yet we have to spend a lot of money to secure everything because thieves are insolent enough to take what is not theirs. I guess they eventually will get what is coming to them.

Exactly, AmbiePam, locks should only be there to remind outsiders to "keep out", but well, some people don't get the reminder fairly well.
But then again, we should also take extra care.

I'm so sorry! That is sickening, isn't it? That people would think so little of others, and just take whatever they want without doing a thing to earn it. I found out this morning that the church I go to was robbed, of a sort. My dad is the pastor, and he was telling me this morning he has to get two new air conditioning units for the church. Apparently, some people stole the copper out of the air conditioners (air conditioners are of course located outside of the church). They can sell the amount of copper they stole for about forty bucks. Yet to replace the air conditioning units they ruined, it costs $5,000. It made me so angry. Our church does not have a lot of money. Everything they take in, goes right back out to the community. Thankfully, the church does have insurance. I asked my dad today if there was a way to put something around the air conditioners that would make it virtually impossible for someone to do that again, and he said yes. He just never thought he would actually need to.

They will surely await for a heavy punishment for stealing from a community that serves God. I mean that's what the elders say. God will be the one to make them pay for what they did.
We also have very old churches here in the Philippines. One of the oldest church in Asia here has antique statues of Saints and of Mother Mary. There were many robberies that happened because the dresses were adorned with precious metals, and antique beads. Sometimes, it is the statue itself that gets stolen. The robbers took advantage of the wooden walls that have deteriorated in time and they gained entry there.

We got caught at our first house several times. Then we got a sliding door lock and a dog and padlocked the gates. Then they broke into the garage. :-) I was happy when we left that neighborhood!

Same problem with our neighborhood at our new house. Many boarders complain that the clothes they hang outside always got stolen so they were also forced to keep a dog. Unfortunately for us, we cannot let the dogs off their leash because our house doesn't have a fence. Too risky for passersby and for the dogs too.
We keep hearing rumors that the dog pound will be after stray dogs even with collars on, and those individuals who slaughters them for food.
