your role as a parent |
| |
| Hello everyone, The other day on mylot, someone asked if we as parents will introduce smoking, drinking etc to our children or leave it to their friends. That question got me thinking because I personally feel it would be absurd for a parent to introduce such things to their children whether directly or indirectly (as we know some children learn from what they see their parents doing). I don't know why the person asked the question and this is not an attempt to judge them but like I said, it got me thinking. I do have a question for parents. What do you see as your ROLE(S) as a parent? I have a 6 month old daughter so am quite new to the parenting business. I would love to hear from you. Thank you. | | | | | |

| | The most important role of a parent as I see it is that we are supposed to guide and love our children. I want to hold their hands through the milestones that they reach in their lives and I want to make sure that they know right from wrong. Beyond that, when the time comes that they start to ask me questions, I will be honest with them about the ways that I behaved when I was younger myself, I think it would be wrong to lie to them about the way that I was. I will probably allow my children to drink in my home if that is their desire because I would rather know that they are at home and safe than outside the house and at risk. | | | | | | |

| | I agree that we are suppose to guide and love our children since we are expected to know better than them. I like what you said about honesty. Thanks for sharing | | | |

| | My role as a parent is to mold my children into decent, respectable adults that will contribute to society. By the way.. that discussion you're referring to, I'm guessing when they asked if you'll "introduce" these things to your children, they most likely meant will you educate your child about the drugs.. not will you offer them to your child. It's always best that a child be educated about drugs by their parents than by their peers. Parents will give straightforward answers and explain dangers while peers will avoid explaining dangers and probably make it sound better than it actually is. | | | | | | |

| | Hi there, thank you so much for your comment and making things clearer. I have now realised that not everyone that comments here has English as their first language and therefore different words are used to mean different things. Your comment has made it clearer for me and from that perspective I can see that the question now makes sense. I like the words you have used decent and respectable. I believe that a good upbringing makes good people in the society. | | | |

| | Hi Tolted! My daughter is only 6 years old. And she is well aware about the effect of alcohol and what smoking is. Because she saw that in her uncles. And as a parent, I slowly explain to her that smoking is bad for your health. She saw the effects of alcohol and she doesn't love the smell of her favorite uncle when he is drunk. And she is very fond watching television about health and other interesting stuff. And as a parent, we play a big role in explaining, more often dissecting those informations to them. I really take my role as a parent seriously. And my dad was a chain smoker but unlike my brothers, I didn't like the smell of cigarettes at all. And the effects it had on my dad, the same with alcohol. So as a result, I don't smoke. I occasionally drink. And only once, I have drank alcohol in front of my daughter. It was at New Year's eve with my brothers and my sister. And that was the first time we did it as a family. So it was a family occasion and a happy one. Hopefully, setting the right example will help her into avoiding those stuff. And if given she will try to drink or smoke, not smoke, hopefully, at her right age. And no pots or weeds or any drugs no no no... | | | | | | |

| | hi there, it's nice that you are explaining to your daughter the effects of alcohol and smoking. I think we as parents need to give our children a full picture of the vices out there and the consequences and pray they make the right choices! You are right we need to set good examples for the little ones. Thanks for your comment | | | |

| | By introduce do you mean actually give it to your children to try? Or do you mean introduce the topic through educating them and so forth? I am definately going to use the method my mother used with me, she educated me and then scared the living daylights out of me! My mother informed me about all the dangers involved with alcohol, smoking, drug use, ect...and then said to me "if you even so much as try it I will know, I have done everything so there is no hiding what you are up to" which scared me enough to not mess with anything until I was older. So this is the approach I am going to take with my children when they are older. | | | | | | |

| | sorry for the late response to your comment. To answer your question, I wasn't sure what the other person meant but my understanding now is they meant introduce the topic to educate them. seems our mothers used same approach. My mum also scared me with the consequences of bad stuff! It sure worked! thanks for sharing | | | |
