No, this isn't one of my sleep-deprived ramblings. I really found this on the BBC news pages
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/science_and_environment/10088502.stm
Its quite an interesting little creature but, I'm sorry, it just looks like someones drawn a face on a - ... well, what do you think??
Do you have any unusual animals in your local environment or have you see any on your travels?

Now that's one good lookin' mole rat!!!
When it comes to the animal kingdom, my home country of Australia has more freaks than a Marilyn Manson concert! One of the most unique of them of all is the platypus. It has webbed feet for swimming, a bill like a duck, a poisonous spur, a furry body; and it lays eggs even though it's a mammal! It kinda looks like Daisy Duck and Fozzie Bear's love child.....

Sure does! It's not only a unique animal in terms of it's monotreme status (egg laying mammal) it's considered as rare for being one of a very few venomous mammals as well. The males only have a spur that can deliver a venom that causes severe pain to a person, but I'm not aware of any recorded fatalities? I'm not aware of the platypus using the spur for hunting either? I believe it's more of a defense mechanism and it can kill or incapacitate smaller animals that attack them. Oooooh, a serious conversation! Hold me.....
Back to work I go! It's great to have caught up with you Wizzy!

Dear Sir James,
Many thanks for your informative post regarding the duck-billed platypus. My only other enquiry would be concerning its receptiveness to spanking. Should I get one to replace my panda? (I guess that depends where the poisonous spur is located...)
I'm sure a tube of Smarties would alleviate your temporary problem of seriousness.

Just you wait, they will become the latest celebrity pet!! It goes to show how all the species are important so that scientists can learn about little old us and how to help us live longer and happier lives. They are so ugly they are cute.

I like armadillos
Years ago, when we went to Florida, my dad spent a fair bit of time going off for walks and he said he'd seen loads of them along the way. They look like animal soldiers dont they? You can imagine them in some animated film guarding the city walls (maybe I actually HAVE seen it in a film... sometimes reality and imagination blur for me
)

We've got this artist who used to live in Austin and he kind of made the Armadillo the local animal celeb - at least until the bats moved to town...
We were the home of the Armadillo World Headquarters, an early music scene place in town. Now Threadgills operates a food/music site on the lot where the AWH was.

They certainly are a very unique looking creature. They do look a little bit like a willy with teeth!
Nothing really odd around here in the way of creatures. Australia is full of weird and wonderful animals that are found nowhere else, but I think people are aware of most of them.
The craziest one that people may not know of is probably the drop bear which drops out of trees onto unsuspecting European female tourists. It gains great satisfaction out of scaring the bejeezes out of them! It also has a taste for rum, so if anyone around is drinking it, they should be very wary of this creature of the trees!

Yeah, the great drop bear is indeed a mythical creature. Just thought I would throw that one in seeing as we were in Panda Spanking territory!

You're absolutely right!

The way they climb over top each other in the tubes, you'd think there was a shoe sale somewhere.

Hiya Wizzy,
Have read all about those creatures they seem quite unreal to look at they remind me of something I saw on the Television in a silly program they are part of it and they look almost like that sabre toothed sausage
Have included a youtube link below it is not an affiliate link just a youtube one so you can see what I mean. Well they are a bit of a different colour but the looks are almost the same.

Found it really interesting to read did your friend send you that one too? Maybe they will find an answer in these creatures.
Last but not least we have had a "chupacabras" it´s a sort of animal some say it looks like a werewolf or a big dog. Various farmers have had their Sheep attacked and their throats pierced from the inside not from the outside. This has happened in several villages around one called Caparroso in Navarra.
I kid you not Caparroso is quite a scary odd place to be in I can tell you.

They have quite nice Houses too but I would not fancy living there. It´s near to an old military base where American Generals frequently visited the place.

Hiya Wizzy,
I was watching a cute story yesterday too about two cats and that was quite amazing. But it has´nt anything to do with this either. Maybe their investigations will lead somewhere and they can find a cure for those deadly diseases that are around at the moment. Quite extraordinary creatures these sausage things are´nt they?

I understand, I do the same thing!
