Everyone in my house was getting wireless internet except me. I read that my laptop has internal wireless card.o I tried installing the router CD. At one point it said do something or hold the reset button for ten seconds. I did that. During the process, it said hook the ethernet cord from one of the numbered ports to the ethernet port on your computer. The ethernet port on my computer doesn't work so I stopped. But now no one can get wireless internet. There is a person here who has x box. we tried some things. unhooking the modem for ten seconds, the router for thirty seconds. I tried even longer times. On the x box screen it shows it's receiving the signal and it is strong but it's not picking up the internet. It had some points on what to do if you can't get wireless. It looks like it has to do with the dns. Probably when I hit the reset button.

If you hard reset your router, it will just restore back to original factory settings, meaning, it will delete all settings saved on the router and you may need to reconfigure it again. Check with your Internet provider, they usually have tech support that can walk you through in setting up or reconfigure your router. Also you did not mention what type of router you have.

Hello marty, If you have done a hard reset, the router is using factory default. Some routers have a WEP key by default. If it's the case, this WEP key is probably written under your router. It would be better to find the old parameters of the key in another computer and to enter them again in your router to give back an internet connection to others. Entering this key in your laptop will give you an internet connection too.

I found an IC ID under the router. Is that it? By the way, this is a Linksys. So how do I enter that into the router? And where do I enter it in my computer.

A Linksys router does not use a WEP key by default. After a hard reset the wifi network is opened and the xbox should have connected without any problem. I don't understand what your reset did . You will probably have to configure a new WEP key. This guide may help : http://www.tekstenuitleg.net/en/articles/networking/wireless-security-guide/configure-wep.html

When it comes to wireless routers we need a manual for it. Usually a manual can b e found on the installation CD. What we need to know is the IP address of the router. Different manufacturers use a different IP address for their products. Commonly used IP address is 192.168.1.1, followed by 192.168.1.2. I have one wireless router wiyh an IP address of 192.168.10.28. From a computer which is connected by cable, or is receiving a wireless signal from the router, start a browser, and type in the IP address in the address bar. You should get a menu for the router. In the menu there should be an option to set up the router. Refer to the step by step instruction given in the manual. You need to know the account ID and password with your service provider. There should not be a problem in setting up the Internet connection. The above is how I deal with my router. Your case may be different. The router may have been provided by your ISP, and set up by them. In my country they, as claimed by the technicians, are changing strategy. New users are not allowed to set up the router by themselves, and no manual is given. Customers have to call their technician if anything goes wrong with the router, and pay for the service provided. Hopefully you re allowed to change the settings without having to call the technician. As a postscript any wireless equipment does not need to be set up the way you did in order to get Internet access. Simply ensure that it is working, and the router's firewall is disabled until after the MAC of the new compuyer has been obtained. If it has an Ethernet card simply plug in a cable connecting the computer and the router if the router has a free LAB socket.

depending of the router you usually disconnect it from the electricity then press the reset bottom for 30 segs and re plug it
